Houston Texans: Keys for Thursday Night Game vs. Indianapolis Colts

Brett StephenDec 21, 2011

The Houston Texans have a relatively easy game this week as they take on the 1-13 Indianapolis Colts Thursday night in primetime.

With a playoff spot already secured, the Texans need to use this game to get prepared for a playoff run without putting themselves in a position to be upset.

Starting quarterback T.J. Yates has for the most part played well since replacing Matt Leinart. But coming off of his first disappointing performance, he needs a confidence building game.

The Texans need to put him in a position to make some safe throws to get his mind off of the multiple interceptions.

Establishing the running game early will be the key to his success.

Houston needs to really put their foot on the gas in the first half, build a significant lead and allow some starters to come out midway through the third quarter.

Games like this can be used as a great way to provide key players with an opportunity to rest and recover from the nagging pains and injuries that are common in the NFL.

Getting guys like Arian Foster and Yates a break in the fourth quarter will give guys like Ben Tate and Jake Delhomme some needed reps before the playoffs start.

The last thing the Texans need is for Foster or Yates to get hurt at the end of the game when the Colts are frustrated and may be taking hits on their divisional foes too far.

Delhomme hasn’t played in live NFL action in over a year, so getting him a drive or two will be beneficial if the starting role ever falls to him this postseason.

Despite Indianapolis’ record, they are improving and will be coming into the game with a renewed confidence after winning for the first time last weekend.

Confidence, paired with a home crowd, against a divisional rival will make this game tougher than most people are thinking.

Above all things, the Texans need a win this Thursday night.

Getting Yates back into a confident rhythm and coming out of the game with no significant injuries will just be icing on the cake.
