Robert Griffin III and 2 QBs Who Need Huge Bowl Performances to Solidify Stocks

Eric BallDec 21, 2011

The opportunity to woo NFL scouts has dwindled to almost nothing for the top college prospects, but they still have a few chances to improve their draft stocks.

The combine in February will be big, but performing well in a bowl game is even better.

Here are three quarterbacks who can vault up the big board with giant performances in the next three weeks:

QB Robert Griffin III: Baylor Bears

The Heisman winner has had one heck of a year.

The junior’s numbers are absolutely insane: 3,998 yards, 36 touchdowns, six interceptions while completing 72 percent of his passes, with another 644 yards and nine TDs on the ground.

Yet through no fault of Griffin's own, Baylor isn’t exactly a nationally recognized football program. Rarely did the entire country get a chance to watch him play.

It’s a shame that the Bears were insultingly given a bid in the Valero Alamo Bowl against Washington, but at least it will be on ESPN.

With the nation watching, as long as Griffin puts up another gaudy stat line, the latest addition to the Heisman family will be a shoe-in for a top-10 pick.

QB Ryan Tannehill: Texas A&M Aggies

Tannehill has the foot quickness and athleticism to be a factor in the NFL, and his arm strength and accuracy on the run make him a potential starter.

The Meineke Car Care Bowl against Northwestern isn’t exactly a glamor bowl, but it will allow scouts to watch him put up one last stellar game in college.

The Aggies have the 11th-ranked offense in the nation, and Tannehill can solidify a spot in the second round with a strong performance.

Not bad considering he was thought to be a fourth-rounder before the season started.

Kirk Cousins: Michigan State Spartans

Cousins showed improvement in each and every season as a Spartan, culminating in his senior year, in which he threw for 3,016 yards, 24 TDs and seven interceptions.

Cousins doesn’t have great arm strength, but he has tremendous touch and precision, his leadership is terrific, and he is extremely cerebral.

The Spartans play in the Outback Bowl against Georgia on January 2, and one last big performance against an SEC defense can propel him to somewhere in the middle of the draft.

This game could be the difference between the third and fifth rounds.
