Derrick Rose: Bulls Wise To Secure League MVP Long-Term

Eric BallDec 20, 2011

The Chicago Bulls are going to be good for a long time.

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Derrick Rose has agreed to a five-year, $94 million extension that the Bulls plan to officially announce on Wednesday.

The lockout ended up helping Rose, who will make around $10-11 million more than he could have under the previous CBA agreement. It’s somewhat ironic considering the new rule that allows young players who outplay their rookie contract to be financially rewarded has been dubbed the “Derrick Rose rule.”

Rose won the MVP award last season and is the youngest player to ever receive the honor at the age of 22. He has been everything Chicago could have ever hoped for when they drafted him No. 1 overall in the 2008 draft. The extension is set to kick in for the 2012-2013 season according to the report, which means the Windy City will have Rose for at least the next six years.

The fastest point guard in the league can score at will, plays razor-sharp defense and has the mentality you want from a superstar. Just check out his quote in wake of landing the new extension:

"

I don't play for money. I play to win.

"

That’s the kind of approach you want to hear from a franchise player. He embodies everything you’d want in a point guard. On top of the 25 points and 7.7 assists he averaged, it was the incredible leadership and poise displayed in the playoffs that really stand out.

Few 22-year-olds could ever command the respect of men up to 18 years older than him, yet somehow Rose had the entire team listening by the end of the regular season. At the age of 23, Rose already has Eastern Conference Finals experience and the respect of his teammates.

Fans in Chicago can now breathe easy knowing that they won’t be dealing with a disgruntled superstar for a very long time.
