Chargers vs. Lions: TV Schedule, Live Stream, Radio, Game Time and More

Richard LangfordDec 20, 2011

On Saturday, the Chargers and Lions will battle each other in a game with far-reaching playoff implications.

San Diego is in the midst of a December resurgence. They cannot afford another loss if they want to keep their postseason hopes alive.

Meanwhile, the Lions need just one win to clinch a wild-card playoff spot. This figures to be an exciting and high-scoring game.

Betting Line: Lions -2 (according to Football Locks)

Fantasy Start 'Em, Sit' Em

Start 'Em: Chargers' QB Philip Rivers

Rivers has spent most of this season performing well below his established standard of fantasy awesomeness. Those days are long gone.

He has thrown seven touchdowns in his past three games, and is showing signs of slowing down.

Sit 'Em: Chargers' WR Malcom Floyd

The Lions have been playing wideouts very tough this year. Football Outsiders ranks them third against opposing No. 1 WRs and fourth against No. 2 WRs.

This will lead to Rivers looking for a healthy Antonio Gates and his slot receivers more often in this game. When he does look towards his wideouts, he will be turning his attention to Vincent Jackson first.

Chargers Player To Watch: RB Ryan Mathews

Mathews has added big-play potential to the Chargers' backfield. He is now over 1,000 yards for the season, and is averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

However, he still fumbles too much. He has put the ball on the ground five times this season.

Mathews figures to be a big part of the Chargers' game plan this week, as he will attack a Lions team that ranks last in yards allowed per carry.

Lions Player To Watch: WR Calvin Johnson

Megatron was in full dominating force last week. He ended with 214 yards and two touchdowns. He is clearly ready to bring it for the Lions' stretch run.

Stafford will be looking Johnson's way often in this game, and chances are he will produce a big play or five.

Key Matchup: Lions' Pass Rush vs. Chargers' O-line

One of the keys to the Chargers' offensive revival is better pass protection. Over their last three games, the Chargers have allowed a sack on just 2.33 percent of all pass plays.

That number would lead the league by a wide margin if it represented the Chargers' entire season. If the Lions want to contain Rivers, they are going to have to get pressure on him.

On the Hot Seat: Chargers coach Norv Turner

If Norv Turner wants to to keep his job, the Chargers are going to have to win out. Three weeks ago, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the one they call Norv would get canned.

That is not such a slam dunk now, but Mr. Turner could make management's decision really easy if he loses to the Lions.

Prediction: Chargers 37, Lions 24

The Chargers are playing as well as any team in football right now. They dismantled the vaunted Ravens' defense last week.

They are healthy and clicking. The Lions will not be able to stop this offense, and the Chargers' defense will do enough to help San Diego pull out a fairly easy victory.
