Alex KayDec 20, 2011

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hosting the St. Louis Rams for a late-season matchup that has a ton of postseason implications.

Those playoff scenarios only affect the Steelers obviously, as the Rams have been a eliminated for a while now and have no chance of a postseason appearance.

Keep reading to find out what Pittsburgh needs to do to secure a first-round bye and if the Rams have any chance of pulling a miraculous upset.

What's At Stake?

Pittsburgh faltered on Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers and looked absolutely awful in the process.

They need a win here to have any chance of locking up the AFC North and possibly a first-round bye.

Should they win out, they’d also need both the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens to drop one of their final two games for this to happen.

The Rams have very little at stake at the end of a 2-14 season and gain nothing by winning here except pride and possibly a lower pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

QB Sam Bradford: Doubtful (Ankle)

QB A.J. Feely: Questionable (Thumb)

Steelers Injury Report

QB Ben Roethlisberger: Questionable (Ankle)

RB Rashard Mendenhall: Probable (Ribs)

Fantasy Start 'Em, Sit' Em and Sleeper

Start ‘Em: Rashard Mendenhall

The Rams give up 153.4 yards per game on the ground and have allowed 12 touchdowns to opposing rushers.

Mendenhall is probable for the week, so be cautious and sure to monitor his status, and make sure he is active for the game.

He’s going to go off if he is healthy.

Sit ‘Em: Ben Roethlisberger

If you watched the 49ers dismantle the Steelers offensive line, you’ll know not to start the obviously ailing Roethlisberger.

He was hit almost every time he dropped back and looks very banged up.

The QB is a poor start on short rest.

Sleeper: Steven Jackson

Jackson is the only viable fantasy player on the Rams roster. He had nine receptions for 72 yards and 18 carries for 71 yards against the stingy Bengals D last week.

Those are solid numbers, and you could do much worse in a PPR league.

What They're Saying

Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette found that Ben Roethlisberger thinks he was the best 49ers player on Monday night.

"

Roethlisberger's mistakes hurt the Steelers worse than his ankle problem did. Give a lot of credit to a very stout 49ers defense, which came in leading the NFL in fewest points allowed, rushing defense and turnovers. Not that Roethlisberger was in much of a mood to do that.

"I'm not going to make any excuses. I played a bad football game," he said. "I was probably the best 49er tonight.”

"

Jim Thomas at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch got in-depth with the Rams awful offense.

"

The Rams rank last in the league in third-down conversion rate (26.9 percent) and are 30th in red-zone offense, scoring touchdowns on just 35.7 percent of their possessions inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

"It's hard to move the ball when you're not converting on third down," head coach Steve Spagnuolo said following the loss to Cincinnati. "We haven't been able to generate those explosive plays, and that's kind of been the story a lot.

"

Rams Player to Watch: Steven Jackson

It’s insane to see Jackson still busting his butt to produce for a team that has not made the playoffs since his rookie year.

He should get back there eventually if he continues to play his heart out.

Steelers Player to Watch: Ben Roethlisberger

Can Big Ben recover from the beating he took on Monday?

He was absolutely crushed on most of his drop backs, and his injured ankle is probably killing him today.

However, the man is a warrior and will without a doubt be back on the field.

Key Matchup: Rams defense vs. Steelers running game.

Look for the Steelers to pound the rock on this porous run defense.

If the Rams can stop it, they might have a hope to win.

On the Hotseat: Steve Spagnuolo

Anyone who is 2-14 at this point in the season can’t be doing a very good job at coaching.
