WWE: Should Alberto Del Rio Be Buried Already?

Anthony SifuentesDec 20, 2011

Alberto Del Rio has been on a losing streak of late and one has to wonder whether or not the WWE should continue to invest in Del Rio.

The title losses came against the two top wrestlers of the company, John Cena and CM Punk. In both instances it was Del Rio's first one-one-one matchup on PPV against either man.

Having won the championship initially at Summer Slam after cashing in his Money in the Bank contract, Del Rio successfully defended the belt against Rey Mysterio the following night on Raw.

That same night he began a rivalry with John Cena. It was a feud I had initial reservations about, mainly because I feared that Del Rio's title reign would end as quickly as it began; as soon as he stepped in the ring with Cena.

My fears came true. Immediately at the next PPV, Night of Champions, Del Rio was defeated by Cena for the title.

Del Rio regained the belt at Hell In A Cell in a Cell match against Cena that also involved CM Punk. He defeated Cena in a Last Man Standing match that was essentially a handicap match with Ricardo Rodriguez heavily getting involved.

Cena next teamed with the Rock to feud with the Miz and R-Truth. So with that, the disappointing feud between Del Rio and Cena was apparently over.

That should not have been a problem. Del Rio turned his attention to Punk. This was a chance to make up for Del Rio's feud with Cena.

It happened again. Del Rio lost his title to Punk at the very next PPV, Survivor Series. Okay, Survivor Series is one of the big four, but still, even with all momentum with Punk, Del Rio should have beaten Punk.

Finally, Del Rio lost in the Triple Threat TLC match at TLC. The damage had already been done though, so this recently loss doesn't hurt him.

What I am saying though, is Del Rio should still be champion. If he had to lose, then it should have come at TLC.

Del Rio should have defeated Cena and Punk cleanly, or at least should have defeated Cena cleanly.

Del Rio needed to have a lengthy title reign that was not cluttered with excessive cheating. That obviously did not happen. As mentioned at the beginning, Del Rio has already become a two-time champion in relatively quick fashion and his matches have been full of cheating.

So, to answer my own question of whether or not the WWE should give up on Del Rio, my answer is no.

The WWE can very well turn Del Rio around.

For starters, keep Rodriguez away for awhile. He can still introduce, but don't have him interfere. As mentioned above, Del Rio's matches are becoming handicap matches—and he is still losing.

It appears that CM Punk will remain champion for a while. Not a problem. There are plenty of other top stars that Del Rio can engage in a rivalry with.

Eventually he should be champion again. This time it should be longer than his first two title reigns combined.
