LSU vs Alabama Rematch: Why Rematch Will See Even Less Points

T.J. McaloonDec 20, 2011

The BCS National Championship game between LSU and Alabama has a chance to make up for the defensive battle from their regular season game. However, with the time off between Alabama and LSU’s last games, it will give us a result of less points in their BCS National Championship rematch.

In their first contest, both teams didn’t gain over 300 yards total on offense. Each team turned the ball over twice and failed to put the ball into the end zone.

The LSU defense held Alabama’s rushing attack, led by Heisman Trophy candidate Trent Richardson, to under 100 yards for the game, while the Alabama defense held the LSU’s passing game to under 100 yards.

Their 9-6 overtime game was the second-lowest point total all-time in a game that had the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country. No. 1 on the list was the 0-0 tie between Army and Notre Dame in 1946.

Before their first game, LSU and Alabama had one full week to prepare. For the BCS National Championship game, they will have five weeks to get their defenses ready for whatever these offenses can throw at them.

The layoff of 37 days since LSU’s clinching of the SEC title has given the No. 1 and 2 defenses in the country enough time to give a better performance than what we saw during their first meeting.

For Alabama, their layoff of 44 days has given them even more time to get ready to limit this LSU Tigers rushing attack that gained 148 yards against Alabama. LSU’s rushing game helped propel the Tigers into field-goal range in overtime to give them their close-range field goal to win.

For those of you who love tight defensive contests that see two coaches playing field position through punting, this BCS National Championship game will be right in your wheelhouse.

However, those of us who were hoping for at least one touchdown in this rematch will be disappointed.

This year’s BCS National Championship game will not come down to a thrilling overtime victory for LSU again. Instead, LSU is going to do a better job in taking away Richardson while grinding out enough of a rushing game to kick three field goals.

The final score in the “Game of the Century” Part 2 will be, LSU 9, Alabama 3.
