WWE: How Kane's Classic Mask Gimmick Will Be Better Than Ever

Matthew HemphillDec 20, 2011

For years, many fans have wanted to see Kane don the mask that made him so famous one more time to become the Big Red Machine again.

In a year that saw Zack Ryder become famous, John Cena get a smaller role on TV, CM Punk finally get his due and Daniel Bryan get a push by the company, this also took place.

Kane disappeared from TV after being taken out by Mark Henry, but by then his stock was diminished in the company to the point where fans noticed, but didn't care.  At least not to the point they would have a few years ago.  Fans still wanted him to return to their TV's, but not with a serious sense of urgency.

And then the promos started appearing.

They were well-built, but the part that got the Internet buzzing was the mask being shown at the end of it.  It was something that hadn't appeared in years and now it was part of an ad which mentioned Kane's return.

Fans weren't sure what to expect, but quickly got their answer when Kane returned on RAW and destroyed John Cena after his fight with Mark Henry.  Not only did he appear masked, but in old form as it took only one chokeslam to put Cena down.

Nothing was said. He didn't mention why he had returned or what his purpose was.  He didn't even tell fans why he had placed the mask back on.  All he did was go out into the ring and dominate whoever happened to be there.

It felt like a return to form.

At the same time, it has the potential to be so much more.

Not only has Kane worn the mask before, but he has had enough years in between the first run with it and this second run to learn new things.

He has grown better in the ring, a seemingly difficult task as he was already great, and has developed his character in a way that the mask never allowed.

When he had the mask removed, he had to learn to control his facial expressions and relied more on promos than he had in the past.  It may not have made his character as interesting as when he had been more of an ominous presence, but it gave him experience.

Now he has returned with a mask that not only gives him the same ability to project the silent strength that he used to have, but with the added features of letting fans see his emotional expressions.

Kane can use it to make a version of his character that becomes the best fans have ever seen solely because of the range that it can show both in and out of the ring.

It also could end up helping him become the best version of Kane fans have ever seen.

It will be interesting to watch as it progresses.

The fans finally got what they have always wanted.

Now let's hope it delivers.
