Steelers vs. 49ers: Power Outage Puts Monday Night Football Game on Hold

Ryan RudnanskyDec 19, 2011

The only thing that could have made Monday night's matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers disappointing was if it didn't happen at all.

Well, right before the game was supposed to get underway on Monday, the power went out at Candlestick Park, putting the game on hold.

According to Clark Judge of CBSSports.com, a transformer blew out next to the stadium, having to be taken care of by city engineers.

Update: After about 15 minutes of power outage, the lights began coming back on at Candlestick Park on Monday night, pushing the projected start time to about 8:58 p.m. ET, according to Judge.

The teams went out for warmups as the crowd cheered and got set to kickoff Monday Night Football.

Candlestick Park has been the source of scorn throughout the years. Fans dealing with the windy weather can attest to that. There have been times when fans have looked more like they were going to Tahoe than a football game.

There's also been the incident this preseason when the 49ers played the Oakland Raiders and after the game two people were shot and one was beaten inside one of the stadium bathrooms.

The power outage on Monday night brought back memories of the earthquake that shut down the 1989 World Series featuring the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Athletics for 10 days.

The good news is that the 49ers will almost assuredly be moving to Santa Clara after the City of Santa Clara secured $850 million in funding for the project, according to San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, via CBS San Francisco.

Update: 10:00 PM EST

The light's have gone out once again at Candlestick with the 49ers leading the Steelers 6-0 with 12:13 remaining in the second quarter. San Francisco turned two Ben Roethlisberger interceptions into two field goals.

The light's were turned back on around 10 PM EST and the game resumed after a 16 minute delay.

Update: 11:09 PM EST

Per ESPN, NFL will attempt to finish game on Monday unless it becomes a public hazard to fans. If that is the case, game will be completed Tuesday during the day or moved to Oakland if needed.

Mike Tirico offered an explanation of the NFL's plan on Monday Night Football.
