NFL Playoff Picture: Coaches That Will Miss Postseason Play and Be Fired

Eric BowmanDec 19, 2011

The pressure to win in the NFL is tremendously high, and when a team is constantly struggling and failing to live up to expectations, then changes must be made.

When an NFL team misses out on the playoffs every year, the head coach isn't likely to stick around. Some head coaches have had success, but in recent years things haven't gone over so well.

A few guys could be saved thanks to the lockout ruining a normal offseason, but other will not be.

Whether they entered the season on the hot seat, or they slowly started drifting towards it throughout the season, these coaches will be gone after this season.

Tom Coughlin, New York Giants

Missing the playoffs has become a recent trend for the Giants, but Coughlin remained on staff. This is the final straw for Coughlin though, because the Giants need to change things up.

A rough second-half schedule combined with injuries hindered the Giants' chances, but then the Dallas Cowboys gave them a gift.

Unfortunately, the Giants are choking it all away right now, and at 7-7 the likelihood of them making the playoffs is very slim. They'll have to win the division, but the Cowboys aren't going to let that happen.

Coughlin and the Giants are going to miss out on the playoffs for the third year in a row, and it will result in the firing of Coughlin because it's the right thing to do.

The Giants have too much talent to be missing the postseason, and while some of the players could have done better in certain games, it all falls back to the head coach, which is why Coughlin has to go.

Norv Turner, San Diego Chargers

Despite a six-game losing streak at one point in the season, the Chargers still have an outside chance at reaching the playoffs.

Of course, the likelihood of it happening is very slim. What will happen is the Chargers firing Norv Turner because mediocrity isn't cutting it out west anymore.

Turner has had success, but hardly in the postseason. The Chargers missed out last season, and you'd have to go back to 2008 for the last time the Chargers won a playoff game.

Like New York, San Diego has too much talent to not be in the playoffs. They should've won the AFC West with ease, but Turner is an awful coach in the first half of the season.

Had Turner been able to salvage this season sooner, the talks of him losing his job would go away unless he failed miserably in the postseason. However, the six-game losing streak is all the proof the Chargers need as to why Turner has to go.

Raheem Morris, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Obviously the Buccaneers are already out of playoff contention, but Morris is clearly the favorite for next coach to be fired.

Morris was almost fired last week, but since the coaching staff is thin the Buccaneers couldn't do it. Once the season is up though, Tampa Bay won't waste much time in letting him go.

This is Morris' third year with the Buccaneers, and things looked promising when he turned Tampa Bay from a 3-13 team to a 10-6 team that just barely missed the playoffs this past season.

However, Morris wasn't able to capitalize on last year's success. Currently at 4-10 and on an eight-game losing streak, the Buccaneers have been awful to watch this year.

Had Morris led the Buccaneers to a big win over the Dallas Cowboys this past weekend then perhaps he could've saved his job status. Instead, the Buccaneers were blown out and looked as if they just didn't care to be playing football anymore.

You can blame the lockout all you want, but Morris should have been able to lead the Buccaneers to a solid season. Instead, Tampa Bay has been atrocious and Morris will soon get the boot.

Other coaches that should worry right now are Ken Whisenhunt of the Arizona Cardinals, Leslie Frazier of the Minnesota Vikings and Rex Ryan if the New York Jets end up missing the playoffs. I think they'll make it in, but stranger things have happened.
