NFL Playoff Predictions: 4 Teams Sure to Be One and Done

John RozumDec 19, 2011

Last season the Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, and Atlanta Falcons (all division champions) all felt the brutal affects of having a great season, but then going one-and-done in the postseason.

It's like a punch in the gut because you work so hard all season only to miss your opportunity to keep playing for the Super Bowl. Well, here are two teams from each conference that feel it this January.

Dallas Cowboys

1 of 4

So the Dallas Cowboys have another solid opportunity to win the NFC East. Well, unfortunately for Dallas, they're going to go one-and-done.

With just one playoff win since the 1996 NFL season, the Cowboys have choked at every opportunity the playoffs have given them. What's impressive though, is that two of those games were at home (Seahawks, Giants).

Thing is, it's not like the Cowboys are barely making the playoffs and then getting blown out. They simply are underachieving once January rolls around. They're winning the NFC East but then squandering the opportunity virtually every time.

2009's playoff win over Philadelphia at home was great and all, but then Dallas was blasted in the divisional 34-3 by Minnesota, so that negated a win that didn't amount to anything, especially after how the 2010 season went.

Therefore, until the Cowboys prove their worth in the playoffs, regardless of who they face in the wild card, don't bet on them getting the win. They're simply not worth trusting as proven a few times this season in games against the Lions, Giants, Eagles, Cardinals, and Jets.

Baltimore Ravens

2 of 4

The last time the Baltimore Ravens swept the Pittsburgh Steelers was the 2006 season, and in the playoffs that year, Baltimore went one-and-done.

They earned the AFC's No. 1 seed and were hosting the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional round. However, the Colts prevailed 15-6 who eventually went on to win the Super Bowl.

Two years later, the Ravens played the Steelers in the AFC title game but lost in Pittsburgh and their bitter-rival won the Super Bowl. There's definitely a theme here as the same thing basically happened in 2009 and 2010.

There, Baltimore lost to Indianapolis in 2009 and Pittsburgh in 2010, both went on to win the AFC and Baltimore left the playoffs empty-handed.

With that being said, we can't expect the Ravens to do very much this postseason. For one, they have a losing record on the road and have been upset four times by inferior opponents (Tennessee, Jacksonville, Seattle, and San Diego).

None of which have much of a shot at the playoffs, so unless something clicks in Baltimore and they actually play up to their potential, expect the Ravens to go one-and-done. Just haven't proven they can consistently win on the road this season and get it done in the playoffs.

San Francisco 49ers

3 of 4

The Monday night game is definitely going to tell us how legit or fake the San Francisco 49ers are.

They choked at home to a team known for late-game falters in Dallas and then were out hit in a game at Baltimore. Two weeks later the 49ers failed to produce much offense and were upset by Arizona on the road.

The problem here isn't so much a lack of talent as it is the ability to be multidimensional. San Francisco relies so much on the ground game and stopping the run defensively that they are extremely vulnerable in the passing game on both sides.

And although the talent there has potential, they're not yet good enough to be a one-dimensional offense, as proven by the Ravens and Cardinals.

In the postseason, expect their opponent to relentlessly blitz Alex Smith while using that blitz to also shutdown RB Frank Gore. Forcing Smith to beat you is the best way to expose San Fran's offense and in turn, their defense will struggle in defending the pass.

Let's put it this way, if John Skelton can shred them, there's a lot of other NFL QBs who can get Frisco on their heels.

Houston Texans

4 of 4

It's mostly because of injuries as to why Houston will go one-and-done.

Had the Texans remained healthy they would have an even better shot to get the AFC's No. 1 seed in their first-ever playoff berth.

Now, the defense has been stellar to say the least and TJ Yates has stepped in nicely. Unfortunately, he had a rookie setback against the Carolina Panthers and the defense had a down game.

Their rushing offense with Arian Foster and Ben Tate is their best hope for the postseason, but even still a passing game must be present. The question now is how Yates responds on the road in Week 16.

Although they're playing the Colts, Indy just basically ruined Tennessee's season and is feeling confident against a banged up Texans team. If Houston draws the New York Jets in the wild-card round, don't count on the Texans winning.

We know what the Jets are capable of as they've proven it the past two postseasons despite being the No. 6 seed. Houston's lack of postseason experience will play a role, and it won't help them.

If the Jets can beat Peyton Manning in the playoffs like last season, they can beat TJ Yates this season.
