NFL Playoff Predictions: 3 Teams That Could Struggle to Score in January

Chris TrapassoDec 19, 2011

The NFL playoffs are a totally different animal than the regular season—not only because the pressure and magnitude of each momentum is turned up, but because, in much of the U.S., you're dealing with some winter weather.

All of a sudden, passing the football isn't as easy.

Which clubs may stall offensively in January?

Let's take a look.

Detroit Lions

1 of 3

I know the Lions are fresh off yet another fourth-quarter comeback and that their immense offensive talent was on full display, but I'm a little worried about their offense in the postseason.

They're going to be on the road, and although the league has become extremely pass-happy—mainly because of teams like the Lions—you need to run the football in the playoffs.

Right now, Detroit is 28th in rushing yards gained per game, and they only picked up 57 yards on 19 carries against the Raiders on Sunday.

Are they really going to be able to frequently throw the the ball down the field against the Packers or Giants?

They may get lucky, however, because they could play indoors against a team like the Cowboys or Saints.

Still, when it comes down to it, they'll have to establish some sort of running attack.

New York Giants

2 of 3

Right now, the Cowboys are the leaders of the NFC East and the Giants aren't even in a wild-card spot.

But if they can beat Dallas in the season finale, they should get into the playoffs.

We know they've got a Super Bowl-winning quarterback that has won his fair share of road postseason games in his career. But they've proven to be inconsistent this season and have the worst rushing attack in the league.

That's not going to cut it come January.

Brandon Jacobs seems like the ideal, cold-weather-type back that no defender would want to tackle, but the offensive line is having major issues creating holes for him—or any other Giants running back, for that matter.

They aren't especially great at stopping the run, either.

New York Jets

3 of 3

The Jets have entered the postseason the last two years with a lot of question marks, but they miraculously advanced to the conference championship both times.

This year, because of a diminished power running game (currently ranked 21st in the league) and up-and-down play from quarterback Mark Sanchez, I'm not sure if they can make another run this January.

There's a good chance they'll have to face a top defensive unit like the Ravens, Steelers or Texans in the first round, and we already saw how they struggled against the Broncos in Denver a month ago.

Remember, they were swept by the Patriots this year too.
