Why Norv Isn't Going Anywhere

Sorry, Charger fans, Norv Turner is saving his job again. The Chargers are making their typical December charge, and the coach that almost universally was believed to be on his way out just a couple of weeks ago is extending his contract with each game.

And this is something that many Charger fans do not want to hear. This tweeter is not alone.

That tweeter won't be watching for a while because Turner isn't going anywhere.

Typical December Improvements

Heading into December, the Chargers had lost six straight. Then, the calendar flipped to the holiday month and everything flipped.

The Chargers have won three straight, and they have done so in impressive fashion.

Their victory on Sunday was the most impressive of all. They destroyed a Ravens team, 34-14, that many felt was the best in the AFC.

It is now clear, the Chargers are playing as well as any team in football. How can you fire a coach that has his team playing this well and has the backing of a franchise quarterback?

A Rivers of Support

Philip Rivers is firmly in Norv Turner's corner. The QB offered these words of support following Sunday's triumph and was quoted by Kevin Acee on Sign On San Diego:

Regardless of what happens the next two weeks. It would be crazy for Norv to not be here. We’ve won 48 games in five years. Norv can’t make every throw. Norv didn’t fumble. You can’t go, "Gee, Norv, why did you throw that pass?"

Rivers makes valid points. There is nothing that has changed with the system or the play calling. What has changed is the decisions made and the players running it.

Norv Filled Future

Rivers has always supported his coach. What is different now is that with the Chargers improved play people are more inclined to listen. And so will the Chargers front office.

Instead of seeing reasons why the coaching has let this team down, the team will see why circumstances led to the early failures.

The Chargers were a banged-up and battered team. The offensive weapons like Malcom Floyd and Antonio Gates are starting to get healthy now, and this team is starting to click.

They are still an incredible long shot to make the playoffs, but Norv is not a long shot to keep his job. He will be back, Chargers fans.
