Reasons for the Winnipeg Jets' December Domination

Stephen BrownDec 19, 2011

The Winnipeg Jets have a 6-2 record this month and have been climbing up the standings. They are currently only one point back of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres who are tied for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.

The Jets have been playing some excellent hockey as of late and have been playing as a team.

So what is the cause for such a strong month of December?

Team Effort

The Jets are getting excellent contributions from all over their roster. Although Evander Kane leads the team in points (25), they have eight players within 10 points of his team lead.

In this regard they are not a one-trick pony. They spread around their scoring and can beat you in many different ways. Unlike the San Jose Sharks, who have had one dominant line for the past couple of years, the Jets can spread the wealth.

Acclimation

After starting the new season with so many questions up in the air, the Jets have now acclimated themselves to their new digs, new city and new fans. It is tough to begin a season without having any precedence to guide you along throughout the season.

They began the season 4-7 in October, followed by a 5-8 record in November and are now 6-2 in December. The record confirms their increase in comfort in Winnipeg, especially considering they won their first four home games this month.

Goaltending and Defence

The defensive improvements have been key to their recent success. The Jets have allowed 2 goals or less in every game this month other than in Teemu’s return and the drubbing at the hands of the Red Wings.

By playing a very strong structured defensive system, the Jets do not need to force their offensive hand and can play a much more controlling and dominant game.

Close Game Dominance

The Jets have won every close game this month save their 1-0 loss to the Capitals. By winning these types of games, the Jets show that they can come through when it matters most.

This definitely helps their playoff chances and shows that they can compete in a rugged and close game.

The Jets have been impressive this month and with such a young nucleus, they can continue to improve. Let's wait and see what happens in January before we anoint them with a playoff spot just yet.
