NBA Rumors: Bismack Biyombo Will Boost Charlotte Bobcats with Recent Buyout

Alex KayDec 19, 2011

Bismack “B-Smack” Biyombo is reportedly close to joining the Charlotte Bobcats after reaching an agreement for a contract buyout with his Spanish team, according to CBSSports.com.

Biyombo is a 19-year-old shot-blocking, rebounding, dunking phenom from the Republic of Congo who has been wowing international scouts since he was 16.

The Bobcats made him the No. 7 overall pick in the draft this year and desperately need him to bolster their defense and inject size and energy into a lethargic frontcourt full of scrubs.

They were very concerned that they would have to wait a year for him to reach an agreement with Fuenlabrada, his Spanish league club, before getting him on the roster and beginning to develop a guy who is already drawing comparisons to Ben Wallace and Serge Ibaka.

At 6’9”, Biyombo doesn’t have prototypical size for an NBA PF/C, but his leaping ability is unmatched and he has a knack for playing defense and a nose for the ball off the glass.

His raw offensive game shouldn’t hurt a team that just drafted Kemba Walker and has third-year shooting guard Gerald Henderson ready to shoulder the scoring load. They also added a highly underrated sniper in Reggie Williams from Golden State.

They did lose Kwame Brown to the Warriors, who overpaid the big bust by giving him a one-year, $7 million deal, but that move looks like it worked out perfectly.

If B-Smack indeed joins the Bobcats this season, they will have a lot of spare minutes to allocate the rookie, who should quickly overtake Boris Diaw and DeSagana Diop as the best big man on the roster.

Don’t expect Charlotte to be any real threat this season, but they are guaranteed to be a force in a few short years if they can keep this young, talented and promising nucleus together anchored by Walker at the point and Biyombo down low.
