Tim Tebow: Denver Broncos QB Isn't Ideal Candidate to Speak out Against Bullying

Josh MartinDec 18, 2011

First came the chants of "Tebow! Tebow!" at Mile High Stadium during Denver Broncos home games. Then came the fan-funded billboard around town, begging head coach John Fox to put Tim Tebow in at quarterback.

Now, Broncos fans want their miracle-working quarterback to speak out against bullying of LGBT kids?

According to Deadspin, Andy Szekeres, an enterprising Denver fan and Tebow diehard, has started an online petition to get the Broncos to partake in Dan Savage's "It Gets Better" campaign, which is aimed at stemming the rising tide of suicide among bullied LGBT teenagers.

Now, aside from the potential clash of cultural ideals between Tebow and the campaign, to suggest that Tebow is the survivor of bullying, that he's persevered through demoralizing attacks to succeed as he has, is just a tad bit disrespectful toward the tremendous hardships faced each and every day by kids who are both verbally and physically abused by their peers.

It's not as though Tebow was being pushed around by his teammates and the media. After all, the guy came into the NFL with supreme confidence, the product of two BCS National Championships and a Heisman Trophy. He came in not as a late-round selection, as most gurus expected, but as a first-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

True, he had naysayers and doubters throughout the football world, but never did anyone directly threaten Tebow's well-being for his beliefs or his lifestyle. The closest Tebow has yet come to bodily harm has been from opposing defenders looking to tackle him on the football field—and certainly not because of Tebow's sexuality or religious leanings.

Surely, Andy Szekeres has his heart and his mind in the right place. He wants to see teen bullying come to an end and seems to think Tebow, his favorite "bullied" Bronco, would help in that regard.

But, good intentions aside, the Broncos, with Tebow as their poster boy, are far from the best fit to contribute to this worthy cause.
