Justin WeltonDec 18, 2011

It’s nice to see some actually excitement for the Minnesota Timberwolves this year. Ricky Rubio and Derrick Williams provided an alley-oop dunk against the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday that rocked the rim in their first preseason game.

It was executed like these two have been teammates for years. Rubio is looking for a fresh start. His long awaited debut was promising on Saturday as the Timberwolves destroyed the Bucks 117-96.

Rubio provided seven assists in his debut for the Timberwolves, showcasing his ability to find teammates in any facet of the game.

This rim-rocker was a simple "feel" play where Williams and Rubio were on the same page.

Rubio's shooting ability seems to be thought in terms of his downfall, but it’s an area that can be improved upon. Rubio struggled in 20 Euroleague games shooting 31 percent from the floor and 22 percent from beyond the arc.

Maybe we are witnessing a great one-two alley-oop combination for not only this season but years to come. Williams has great leaping ability and he can run the floor well. Rubio can find the open man while creating opportunities off the dribble.

It seems like a perfect match.

Minnesota was the worst team (17-65) in the NBA last season. The fans want some type of promise in their immediate future. Rubio and Williams’ connection has a chance of being not just good, but great. It depends on their progression as a team. Both players will make each other better.

Some great things start off with something simple like baby steps. Rubio and Williams took baby steps on Saturday. They will hope to have the same type of success in the relative future. Maybe they will be running come midseason.
