Chicago Bulls Rumors: Team Shouldn't Sacrifice Youth for Dwight Howard

Nicholas GossDec 18, 2011

Sacrificing young talent to acquire Orlando Magic star center Dwight Howard via trade would be a poor move by the Chicago Bulls that would destroy the depth that is so valuable to the team's success.

An ESPN report says the Bulls are one of the teams that believe they have the trade assets to acquire the three-time defending Defensive Player of the Year.

In the Bulls' playoff loss to the Miami Heat last season, it was quite clear that the major weakness preventing them from reaching the NBA Finals was a lack of a shooting guard who could score consistently.

The recent addition of former Detroit Pistons shooting guard Richard Hamilton was a fantastic move by the Bulls.

Hamilton will give them a proven scorer who can defend other top scorers and can be depended on to produce each night.

Hamilton will also give Chicago leadership and championship experience. The only other player on the Bulls roster who has won an NBA championship is forward Brian Scalabrine.

Hamilton knows how hard you have to work to win a title in the NBA, and this experience will greatly help the Bulls.

Chicago doesn't need Dwight Howard to improve and win an NBA championship. Center Joakim Noah is a solid player who can score, defend and plays with great passion and energy.

Young forward Taj Gibson has too much potential to part ways with so early in his career, and veteran forward Luol Deng really impressed last season in Tom Thibodeau's first season as Bulls head coach.

Center Omer Asik has tremendous talent as well, and he is one of several young players the Bulls should not trade for a superstar.

Chicago's roster is fine the way it is. They have great depth and as a team play fabulous defense.

In signing Hamilton they have addressed their biggest weakness and all the Bulls need now is for their young players to continue to develop and get better.

Howard and reigning league MVP Derrick Rose would be a fantastic combo, and the Bulls have a lot to offer the Magic for their superstar, but making this trade would not help Chicago win the East any sooner than they would with their current team.

The Bulls have a solid starting five and have a strong bench that can provide scoring, defense and athleticism in any situation.

Chicago is well set up to compete for an NBA championship for the next five years, and ruining the depth the team has worked hard to build by acquiring Howard would be a poor move that is not needed to get the Bulls to the next level.
