NBA Trade Rumors: Why the Orlando Magic Need to Trade Dwight Howard Right Now

Tim KeeneyDec 18, 2011

An upset Dwight Howard is not a Dwight Howard the Orlando Magic want to have, but by not trading him, that is exactly what they will get.

According to a story from the Orlando Sentinel, Dwight Howard still wants to be traded.

Surprise, surprise.

"It still stands," Howard said. “There is no back-and-forth.”

Yet, for some reason, the Magic closed all trade talks and won’t listen to any offers.

That is the worst possible solution to this problem.

I understand they are trying to keep their superstar, and don’t want to get cheated in a trade, but at some point you have to be realistic.

They aren’t bringing Howard any help and he’s clearly not happy about that. If he doesn’t get more help, he wants out.

It’s pretty simple, actually.

But the Magic aren’t trading Howard, they aren’t bringing him help and they are just hurting their future.

If things keep going this way, he’s just going to continue to get more and more upset, his play will get worse and worse, and he will be more inclined to leave next July when he becomes a free agent.

So, the Magic have a couple of options. The one they are choosing is this: Keep an unhappy Howard for one year in a last-ditch effort at making the NBA Finals. Then lose him as a free agent and get nothing in return.

The second option would be to trade him right now. Get a bunch of young talent and another draft pick or two while you can. Orlando probably won’t get as much as they think Howard is really worth, but it’s better than getting nothing for him.

And that’s the road they’re currently on.

The Magic simply can’t afford to keep sitting on their hands and refusing to trade their star center.

It’s going to make everyone involved mad (it’s already starting to) and it’s going to seriously hurt the team’s future.
