Matt McGloin: QB's Altercation with Teammate Hurts Penn State Even More
Penn State has seen its reputation plummet since former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was arrested on Nov. 5 and charged with sexual abuse of young boys.
You figured it couldn't have gotten any worse.
Well, it has.
On Saturday, Nate Bauer of BlueWhiteIllustrated.com reported that Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin was "knocked out" in an altercation with sophomore receiver Curtis Drake in the locker room.
After jawing in practice, Drake reportedly tried to make amends in the locker room and McGloin took exception.
After a push/shove from McGloin, Drake reportedly took McGloin to the floor and punched him in the chin, knocking him out.
Later reports indicated that McGloin may have had a seizure and he was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center, where he was examined, treated and released.
Penn State had been a reputable institution before all of this, mind you. Many graduates had gone on to do big things, garnering huge praise throughout the nation.
But this is truly Penn State's darkest hour.
Beside the fact that the scandal involving Sandusky will probably taint the university's legacy for years (maybe forever), now you have this, an altercation that got bad in a hurry.
There have been countless skirmishes among teammates throughout the years, but rarely does it go this far. This isn't boxing, it's college football.
Where does Penn State start rebuilding its image? When does it bounce back and repair its image?
No one knows for sure, but Penn State certainly isn't headed in the right direction. At this point, Penn State football is not only destroying the university's reputation, it's hurting the nation as a whole. When can Penn State get back to the time when college football was just that, not a living, breathing organism that resembles more of a disease?
If Penn State cares at all, it will exact severe measures in this case.
No more suspending, no more putting high-ranking members of the administration on administrative leave (with pay).
Unless McGloin did something that hasn't been reported yet, Drake should be kicked off the team immediately.
Penn State can't accept deplorable behavior anymore, and the nation just can't take it anymore.
