January Transfers: Fact or Fiction on Winter's 15 Hottest Rumors

Thomas AtzenhofferDec 18, 2011

Less than two full weeks is left before the January transfer window opens up, and with that there is the unstoppable amount of rumors that are coming in and out of the press each day.

While some are completely believed impossible, there is no denying that the winter window always has its surprises, and can usually leave at least someone stunned at a crazy deadline deal.

As the time draws near for us to see what really transpires, I give you my fact, fiction or 50/50 on the 15 biggest rumors that are currently floating around.

Edinson Cavani to Chelsea

1 of 16

Edinson Cavani has been linked with several moves away from Napoli and most recently has been linked to English Premier League side Chelsea by the Daily Mail.

Verdict: Fiction

Rasmus Elm to Manchester United

2 of 16

AZ Alkmaar player Rasmus Elm has been linked with Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham by Givemefootball, but it is unclear who the true front-runner is. At this point there is not enough to say it is truly on the table.

Verdict: Fiction

Fernando Torres to Liverpool

3 of 16

While it would be a dream reunion for many Liverpool fans including myself that would love to see Fernando Torres make amends, it is most likely a long-shot of happening. Andre Villas-Boas himself said there was no way it was going to happen.

However, if Torres fails to make a mark for himself between now and the near end of January, he could indeed be packing his bags. It did not help the rumors that he failed to start against Wigan Athletic at the weekend.

Verdict: Fiction

Landon Donovan to Everton

4 of 16

Landon Donovan looks to have completed all negotiations in order for him to return to Liverpool's Blues side of Merseyside, Everton, for the months of January and February.

Look at one fan's reaction from Yahoo! Sports.

Verdict: Fact

Carlos Tevez to Milan

5 of 16

AC Milan have been on top of the Carlos Tevez hype the last few weeks and could very well make their move for the player. Despite Roberto Mancini being upset with the manner in which the rumors and move has been conducted so far, he will most likely be happy to see the Argentine leave.

Verdict: 50/50

David Villa to Chelsea

6 of 16

This is one of the more ridiculous major rumors that floated about in the last few weeks. Now that David Villa has broken his leg in the FIFA Club World Cup, perhaps the rumors will finally die down.

Verdict: Fiction

Milos Krasic to Manchester United

7 of 16

It is no secret that Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United have major injury issues, but the possible loan move of Milos Krasic to the club from Juventus could help alleviate the strain.

However, it is a complete toss up of whether it will happen.

Verdict: 50/50

Amauri to Tottenham

8 of 16

The recent off-the-bench heroics of Roman Pavlyuchenko makes the move for Juventus outcast Amauri look unneeded.

However, the Russian is most likely to make a move away from White Hart Lane as he seeks regular football, and Harry Redknapp may go the loan route to fill the void as to hold onto a transfer move till the summer.

Verdict: 50/50

Lukas Podolski to Arsenal

9 of 16

The Gunners need a second striker in the mold of Lukas Podolski. If you look at how great the German has been historically with the national team in support of both Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez as well as being able to score clutch goals, he could be an amazing signing for Wenger.

Podolski could thrive in a role supporting Robin Van Persie, and I believe this could be one of the best deals pulled off in January.

Verdict: Fact

Mario Goetze to Arsenal

10 of 16

Another Bundesliga star linked with the Gunners is Borussia Dortmund attacker Mario Goetze. While Goetze is definitely in the age range that Arsene Wenger loves to get his hands on, the possibility of a £30 million or higher price tag is likely to have priced him out of a move.

Verdict: Fiction

Eden Hazard to Real Madrid

11 of 16

Real Madrid definitely have the money to make a move for Eden Hazard from French Champions Lille, but in all likelihood they will probably wait until the summer and allow the Belgian to gain another six months of experience while not on Real's dime.

Verdict: Fiction

Didier Drogba out of Chelsea

12 of 16

Didier Drogba is going to leave the Blues, while it may not happen in January, it is going to happen in the summer. However, I would see Chelsea selling him in January as to take advantage of the value of his current form in order to earn at least a little back before he makes his exit for nothing in return.

Verdict: Fact

Eduardo Vargas to Napoli

13 of 16

Universidad de Chile starlet Eduardo Vargas was believed he was set to move to either Liverpool or Chelsea over the weekend, but the Daily Mirror broke news on Sunday that he was heading to the Serie A to play for Napoli.

Verdict: Fact

David Beckham to PSG

14 of 16

David Beckham was rumored to be set to watch Paris Saint Germain over the weekend, but the Telegraph broke news that the English playmaker was a no-show at Parc des Princes. However, it is still highly likely that Beckham will not pass up the opportunity to participate in the revitalization of PSG after finally helping the Galaxy win the MLS Title.

Verdict: Fact

Gary Cahill out of Bolton

15 of 16

Gary Cahill was one of the hottest debated and hyped transfer targets of the 2011 summer transfer window but nothing came of him moving. Bolton looked good in the first few weeks, further making him look like a great target, but since then, Wanderers have plummeted to the bottom of the League.

Cahill may leave but it will not be for the high price tag that the club once thought they could demand and could see him remain until the summer.

Verdict: Fiction

Conclusion

16 of 16

There is still a lot of time for these deals to either come to fruition or fall apart before January, so stay tuned as it all develops.
