NFL Playoff Predictions: Teams That Would Get Blown out Wild Card Weekend

Andrew KulhaDec 15, 2011

Before a team can even start dreaming of winning the Super Bowl, they have to get into and advance through the NFL playoffs.

It's the first step in a very long and grueling championship process, and only the very best are able to survive it.

Every year 12 teams get the chance, but only one comes out with the trophy.

As we near the end of this season there are quite a few teams still fighting for a spot in the playoffs, but not all of them will be worthy.

In fact, quite a few of those teams would get blown out in their first-round matchups.

Here are two teams I know wouldn't stand a chance if they were to get in.

Detroit Lions

In time, the Lions are going to be a very good team, so please understand that as you read the next few sentences.

That being said, right now they just aren't ready to be a playoff team. Their discipline problems are well-documented, and that's something that can be deadly in the playoffs.

Offensively, their running game has been hit or miss, and Matthew Stafford has been hot or cold. Sure, he's thrown 10 touchdowns in the past five games, but he's also thrown 10 interceptions.

Lions fans will chalk that up to his hurt finger, but the fact is that he struggles with accuracy at times, and he's not always the best decision-maker.

It's not a knock against him, he just needs more time to mature as a quarterback.

While the defense is aggressive, that comes back to haunt them with stupid penalties. It also leads to over-pursuit in the backfield and being out of position, and you can see that reflecting in the 136.1 rushing yards they give up per game.

The Lions aren't ready yet, and if they do make it into the playoffs, I don't think they will play well.

Despite their 7-1 six-game winning streak and 7-1 record under Tim Tebow, I don't see this team preforming well in the playoffs.

There's too much focus on that one game, and their opponent will be able to fully develop a plan to stop the gimmicky read-option offense.

Yes, the running game wins games in the playoffs, but can the Broncos do so against the likes of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who would be their matchup as of right now?

The Steelers are the best team in the league at shutting down the passing game, only giving up 179.1 yards per game through the air, and they are sixth in opponents rushing yards at a terrific 97 yards per game allowed.

They would essentially swallow up the Broncos, who have a hard enough time getting things done offensively.

Sure they've been winning, but the truth of the matter is that this team has played sub-par to borderline playoff teams during the span of the winning streak.

I'm sorry if a streak of wins over a bumbling Raiders squad, the Chiefs, the underachieving Jets, a miserable Chargers team, a rebuilding Vikings team and a decimated Bears team doesn't impress me.

The playoffs are a whole different ball game, and the Broncos don't have what it takes.

They wouldn't stand a chance.
