Knicks Rumors: Shawne Williams Out, Who Is the Next Free Agent on the Radar?

Kelly ScalettaDec 15, 2011

After losing out on Jamal Crawford, the Knicks set their sights on Shawne Williams. That didn't last long, as Williams has agreed to terms with the New Jersey Nets

This is a bad situation for the Knicks. They are now hoping to get Maurice Evans.

Here's an excerpt of John Holllinger's scouting report on Evans:

Apologies for the brutality, but Evans looks like he's about spent. His trademark skills in the league have been that he's a good athlete, he can shoot respectably, and he won't beat himself. The last is still true -- Evans had the fifth-lowest turnover ratio among small forwards.

But athletically, he's got nothing left. Evans finished 64th among small forwards in rebound rate, 59th in usage rate, 51st in blocks, 53rd in steals and 61st in free throw rate. He'll still take corner 3s but he's merely adequate in this area; others do it better. And even when he got to the rim, he converted only 59.5 percent—subpar for a player who used to throw down authoritative jams.

"

That's not promising. The scary thing is that's who the Knicks are hoping to get now. This has got to be hard for a fanbase that just two weeks ago was fully convinced that Chris Paul was the point guard of the future.

While the Knicks were able to secure themselves one of the better centers in the league, they did so at the cost of their starting point guard, and they don't have one now. Well, unless you count Mike Bibby.

So really, they don't. Alongside Bibby will be Landry Fields, who was a nice surprise as a second-round pick last year, but isn't a top-caliber shooting guard.

In fact, it's not hard to argue that now the Knicks have the worst starting backcourt of any team with playoff aspirations.

How bad are things for the Knicks? They are hoping to land an injured Baron Davis in eight to 10 weeks. That's a long, hard fall from Chris Paul.
