How Should Chicago Bears, NFL Punish Sam Hurd for Shocking Drug Bust?

Chicago Bears receiver Sam Hurd was arrested in Chicago on federal drug chargers after a long investigation. The criminal complaint against him alleges that the 26-year-old regularly dealt huge amounts of cocaine and marijuana in and around Chicago.

Hurd was arrested Wednesday night at a Chicago steakhouse and will face a charge that he did "possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine."

First and foremost, the Bears need to cut Hurd immediately. There is no way he'll be available to the team any time in the near future, and they need to cut ties with him as soon as possible to send the right message to the rest of their roster: If you screw around with big-time criminal activity, the franchise will not back you up. 

As for the NFL, commissioner Roger Goodell needs to issue an indefinite suspension for Hurd pending the outcome of his trial. This is serious stuff, as Hurd was negotiating to buy five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week with a confidential informant. He allegedly agreed to pay $25,000 per kilogram for the cocaine and $450 per pound for the marijuana.

Like I said, this is serious. 

Hurd was apparently deeply involved in a huge drug ring, and the league needs to distance itself from him as soon as possible. The same goes for the Bears. 

By all accounts, Hurd is a nice, unassuming young man, but he also just threw his life away to make some extra cash.
