Knicks Rumors: Baron Davis Waived Via Amnesty, Mutual Interest in New York

Matt ShetlerDec 15, 2011

Sometimes, the best moves a team makes are the ones that aren't made.

That could be the case for the New York Knicks, who are now out of the running for shooting guard Jamal Crawford.

Instead of Crawford, the Knicks can turn their attention to re-signing forward Shawne Williams and, more importantly, signing point guard Baron Davis.

Davis was an amnesty cut by the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday and if he clears waivers, he's free to sign with the team of his choosing.

That team could be the Knicks, and there is mutual interest from both parties.

It's doubtful that Davis gets claimed off waivers. considering he's out the first eight-to-10 weeks of the season with a back injury.

Therefore, Davis will have his choice of teams when he's healthy and the Knicks will be high on his list.

Teams like the Knicks, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers are all teams that could be in contention that could use an upgrade at the point guard position.

New York and Davis seem like a perfect match. Adding a guy who's averaged 16.5 points and 7.3 assists per game would make the Knicks offense even more explosive than it already is on paper. Davis could be the key to getting the Knicks over the hump and that's an attractive proposal on both sides.

Waiting 10 weeks could be an issue for some teams, but the Knicks can compete with Toney Douglas and Mike Bibby at the point in the meantime. Adding a talent like Davis when he's healthy would make the Knicks roster even deeper and more lethal.

It's a situation that makes sense and should be considered by both parties.
