NFL Week 15 Predictions: Colts and Other Big 'Dogs Poised to Cover

Eric BallDec 15, 2011

People who don’t look at spreads would think you’re crazy. Picking the underdog is an art form that makes you either look like an idiot or a genius. There’s no middle ground.

Here are two big underdogs sure to make you look brilliant by late Sunday:

Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts: +7.5

The Colts are winless, everybody knows this—yet they are riding a nice 2-0 streak ATS.

Dan Orlovsky is turning into Mr. Garbage, as he has torn up prevent defenses in the fourth quarter in his two games as starter. While he surely stinks, he’s better than Curtis Painter.

Indianapolis put up 399 total yards in the first meeting, the second highest offensive output this season. The Titans aren’t any better defensively, half a season later.

Titans running back Chris Johnson has been a colossal bust this season and is fresh off 23 yards on 11 carries last week against the Saints, and looks like the Tennessee 30th-ranked rushing attack isn’t getting better anytime soon.

I’ll leave you with two tidbits worth noting, courtesy of Matt Fargo of Covers.com:

"

The Colts fall into two solid situations. Play on home underdogs or pickems that are coming off a road loss by 14 points or more, in December games. This situation is 71-32 ATS (68.9 percent) since 1983. Also, we play on home underdogs or pickems with a winning percentage less than .250 in the second half of the season after three or more consecutive losses, playing a team with a winning record. This situation is 28-6 ATS (82.4 percent) over the last 10 seasons.

"

Prediction: Titans 24, Colts 20

Green Bay Packers at Kansas City Chiefs: +14.5

The Packers have a giant bull's-eye on their backs as they creep closer to perfection, and causal bettors feel like no line is too high for them. Adding even more points to that line is the Tyler Palko-led Chiefs. Well, good news: Kyle Orton is scheduled to start on Sunday.

Orton is a legit QB in this league, and his style of taking risks downfield will work beautifully with Dwayne Bowe streaking on the horrific Packers defense.

While the Packers will certainly put up points on the Chiefs, it’s worth noting that the Chiefs have allowed a grand total of 16 points to teams with a combined 17 wins in the last two weeks before the Jets debacle.

They are still competing at a high level despite being out of the AFC West race.

The Pack have beaten opponents by 12 or more in four of their 13 games, but don’t expect that number to grow with the rowdy Arrow Head faithful causing more than a few false starts.

Fun fact: Chiefs are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 when favored to lose by 10 or more.

Prediction: Packers 31, Chiefs 20
