2011 Pro Bowl Fan Voting: Nothing Wrong with Tim Tebow's Pro Bowl Nod

Gabe ZaldivarDec 14, 2011

Tim Tebow is going to the Pro Bowl, and there is nothing wrong with that.

From the fingers of a Tebow cynic to the eyes of you Tebow apologists, I am here to state that I find nothing wrong with a mediocre quarterback being included with masters of the quarterback position in the Pro Bowl game.

There is nothing backhanded about that statement, either. Let me stress that Tebow is not a very good quarterback. Even his biggest fans have to acknowledge that he has struggled through far too many quarters to be considered a prototypical stud at the position.

But that is all part of his charm, because there is nothing prototypical about the guy. He amazes with a throwing motion that should never find any receiver's hands, yet it does. He runs an offense that should at some point be stifled, but it hasn't.

Of all the things you can say about Tebow, you have to consider that this is not how the story should have unfolded, but it has.

Therein lies the storybook tale that is unfolding in Denver. NBC Sports reports Tim Tebow has moved ahead of Ryan Fitzpatrick in Pro Bowl voting.

The report states he has the, "No. 3 position among all AFC quarterbacks in fan Pro Bowl balloting. Tebow has 420,539 votes.  Fitzpatrick has 377,796."

Consider that Tom Brady will again balk at featuring in the game, and you can see that Tebow is all but assured to be one of the three AFC quarterbacks included in the game.

Let's now consider what this game has become for fans. It's something that is watched when nothing else is on that weekend. In fact, it may be one of the least well-liked star exhibitions of any sport. Take this trash, for example.

It's football without the structure, a gridiron classic without the complement of hard hits. It also happens to be an accumulation of the best stories of the year.

While fans' votes only account for one-third of the total that determines a player's inclusion, those that step foot on the field are truly the most famous and well-known superstars.

So let's take a step back from stats and metrics for a moment. As Tebow improves, he will certainly shore those up. But there is no denying that he is a superstar.

The people demand their Tebow, and that means he needs to be at Aloha Stadium on January 29. An all-star exhibition that continues to suffer from lack of interest needs Tebow, who is a rock star, playing the quarterback position.

Tebow will make the Pro Bowl this year, and thank God for that.
