NFL Playoff Predictions: Teams with Best Shots at Upsetting Packers

Zach KruseDec 14, 2011

At 13-0, the Green Bay Packers are just one win or 49ers' loss away from securing home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. Unless something completely unforeseen happens, the road to the Super Bowl from the NFC side will go through Lambeau Field.

But is there a team, either from the final three games or in the postseason, that can upset the defending Super Bowl champions?

Let's run down the teams with the best chance of taking down the unbeaten Packers:

New Orleans Saints

With Drew Brees under center, the Saints have the offensive firepower to go toe-to-toe with the Packers, regardless of where the game is located. You have to like the way the Saints can throw a bevy of solid running backs at the Packers, too. A matchup in Green Bay for the NFC Championship game could when these two meet again.

The Giants showed in Week 14 that they are talented enough to play with any team, including the Packers. In theory, New York has the defensive line to cause Green Bay's offense problems. Jason Pierre-Paul can single-handedly take over a game, and he gave Marshall Newhouse plenty of problems. If Eli Manning continues to play as well as he has, the Giants can beat anyone.

Can you imagine a Super Bowl between these two teams? They might hit 100 combined points. Both defenses give up yards in huge chunks, especially against elite quarterbacks. And if there's any quarterback in the NFL that can upstage Aaron Rodgers, it's Tom Brady.

The Lions will get their chance at upsetting the Packers in Week 17. Depending on how the next two weeks pan out, Detroit may in fact be playing for their playoff lives in the season finale at Lambeau. The Lions will also have Ndamukong Suh back, so the defensive front should be at full strength. They'll need those pass rushers to have their finest game to keep the Packers from potentially achieving regular season perfection.

The success of the 49ers defense has been well-documented this season, but they've made their living stopping the run. The Packers obviously like to line up in three- and four-wide formations and throw the football. Are the 49ers good enoughat stopping the pass to hold the Packers down? And can Alex Smith and the offense make enough plays for it to matter?
