NBA Trade Rumors: David Stern Will Not Get Involved in Dwight Howard Nets Trade

T.J. McaloonDec 14, 2011

When David Stern got involved in the Chris Paul trade that would have sent the all-star point guard from New Orleans to Los Angeles, it resulted in a huge public relations blunder for the NBA.

With a potential deal, sending Dwight Howard from the Orland Magic to the New Jersey Nets, you will not see Stern getting involved to avoid another PR nightmare.

It has been reported by Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski that the Nets are putting together the building blocks of a trade that would land them Howard.

Front office sources say Nets general manager Billy King has aggressively pursued the necessary players and picks to try and satisfy Orlando’s demands for Howard, one of the league’s most dominating and popular players.

If This Trade Happens to Go Through, Would Fellow NBA Owners Veto This Trade?

When a same type of blockbuster trade went through, with Paul heading to Los Angeles, Stern received negative feedback NBA owners expressing their disapproval of the trade.

If the Howard trade would happen, it would involve multiple teams that would have a lot of parts and players being moved just like the Paul trade.

Wojnarowski has said that the framework of this trade would involve a total of four teams, with New Jersey sending Brook Lopez and another player to Orlando to get them to be interested.

How Is This Different From the Paul Trade?

The way this trade differs is the teams involved are not owned by the NBA. With Paul heading to Los Angeles from New Orleans, the other NBA owners could see the players involved were not of equal value.

If the Magic would part ways with Howard, they could get equal value by adding a player like Lopez and another top-tier player from another team.

Fellow NBA owners will not voice their disapproval the same way they did for the Paul trade.

Will the Magic Make This Trade?

Orlando does not want to put themselves into a situation like when Shaquille O’Neal left them for Los Angeles in 1996.

They will have no choice but to force a trade to New Jersey or Los Angeles. Wojnarowski has said that Howard has been willing to sign extensions with the Lakers and Mavericks. However, the most intriguing future spot has been Brooklyn with the Nets.

Orlando wants to do its best to keep Howard on their roster past this year. However, the Magic have to trade their franchise player, or else they will be left in the cold just like when Shaq left.
