Transfer Rumours: 5 Eredivisie Players That Could Leave for England in January

Russell HughesDec 14, 2011

The Eredivisie has always been a league that develops world class players; just think Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben. And as a consequence many teams turn their eyes and scouts to Holland.

This is a list of the top 5 Eredivisie players that have been rumoured to be packing their bags for the Premier League in January.

Gregory Van Der Wiel

The Holland right back is only 23 but has already played 140 games for Ajax and 25 times for Holland. Chelsea are reportedly interested and he would solve their troublesome right back spot.

The 6' dutchman was awarded the award for Eredivisie young player of the season in 2009-2010. Van der Wiel is highly sought after, Bayern Munich wanted him after the 2010 World Cup, but Ajax and Munich couldnt agree a fee.

Jan Vertonghen

The big Belgian has been linked with Tottenham and Arsenal recently, but would set teams back around £10m.

Standing at 6' 2” and 79kg, he would be an imposing defender to get past, Vertonghen is also quicker than Mertesacker and so could be seen as the more attractive of the two if he were signed. Vertonghen has also played with Vermaelen, both for Ajax and Belgium, and so the two could have an instant impact at the back.

Jan also has 35 Belgium caps to his name. The ability to take free kicks adds another string to his Belgian bow.

Rasmus Elm

The Alkmaar midfielder has been in fantastic form and has already scored 8 goals and is credited with 5 assists.

He has been linked with Manchester United after an impressive showing in the England vs Sweden friendly.

The 23 year old Swede has made 19 appearances for Sweden, along with 58 appearances for Alkmaar.

Christian Eriksen

Another Ajax man to have been linked with a Premiership big boy, the youngster has only made 59 appearances for Ajax, but already has 20 caps for Denmark under his belt.

The 19 year old midfielder is comfortable with both feet and can pick out a pass, not quite the Sneidjer that Manchester United were after but give him some time and he could well become as good as the Dutchman.

Both Manchester United and Manchester City have been linked with him.

Standing at just 5'7" and 65kg, he might need to do some bulking up to avoid being knocked off the ball by the Tiote's of the world.

Erik Pieters

The left back has been linked with the likes of Newcastle since the summer, and a £3m move could be in the making.

6'1” and 82kg, he could handle the physical side of the Premier League. He also has international experience having played 14 times for Holland.

The only object in his way of securing a move to the Premier League is his club, PSV's sporting director recently told Goal.com "We want to finish with wins then we have a short winter break. I don’t expect something to happen to our squad."
