Texas Rangers Trade Rumors: Matt Garza and More C.J. Wilson Replacements

Tim KeeneyDec 13, 2011

Even with the loss of CJ Wilson, the Texas Rangers have a full rotation of starting pitchers.

Neftali Feliz, Matt Harrison, Derek Holland, Scott Feldman, Alexi Ogando and Colby Lewis could all find themselves in the rotation, but there's not a true No. 1 on that list.

The Rangers don't appear ready to let the Angels make the last move as it's now being reported they are in the market for another starter.

Here's a look at three cost-effective names rumored to be on the Rangers' radar.

Matt Garza, Chicago Cubs

Garza had the best season of his career last year after moving from Tampa Bay to the NL, which might be a little concerning.

Still, though, Garza's ERA only dropped a little and his WHIP was pretty much the same as the last few years. What he really improved on with the Cubs, however, were his strikeouts. All-in-all, he's been very consistent over the last four seasons and he's thrown at least 180 innings in each.

You pretty much know what you're getting with the 28-year-old: 3.50 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 190 strikeouts.

No. 1 status? Probably not. Good pitcher? Certainly.

Wade Davis, Tampa Bay Rays

At 26, Davis is two years younger than Garza, but he has a lot less experience at the Major League level.

Davis has pitched two full MLB seasons, reaching 180 innings just once. He's yet to post an ERA under 4.00 or a WHIP under 1.35. He doesn't get many strikeouts, either.

The former Lake Wales High School star will certainly come cheaper than Garza, but there's a good reason for that: he's not as good at throwing a baseball.

He's still got potential, though.

Gio Gonzalez, Oakland A's

Gonzalez' name has been floating around trade rumors for a while now, and it's hard to believe the Athletics will trade him within the division.

Still though, he's hit 200 innings the last two seasons, including a 3.12 ERA and 197-strikeout campaign this year.

Gonzalez still has control problems, but he can be absolutely electric at times. He's also still just 26.

He's probably the most expensive player on this list, but he's also the only true No. 1 on it.
