Tim Tebow Mania Threatens To Shape American Politics

Gabe ZaldivarDec 13, 2011

If you have a nuclear fallout bunker just sitting there, threatening to never get used, you may want to fill it with a couple sleeping bags and your favorite loved ones because this country has lost their collective minds.

At some point, the mountain of hype and adoration that is being piled around Denver at the moment is going to collapse on itself. Of this, I have no doubt. You see, there is a cycle for stars that become superstars who then meander into the wonderful world of public deity, we all get sick of them.

For the time being, there is no bigger name than Tim Tebow. His last name is now recognized by the dictionary. Let me stress that once again for those who like to peruse these things rather than savor them like the last Oreo Cookie in the sleeve, Tebow is a thing now, not just a person.

This Fox Sports report cites that Tebowing has entered the realm of English lexicon. Those that care about such things state that they haven't seen such a rise of one word in the vernacular since Obamamania.

And the land of politics is where we land in the current ridiculous turn for a quarterback that is lauded when he actually completes more than a few passes a game.

It's Iowa Caucus time y'all, and that means the proud denizens of the state are being inundated at the moment with political ads and incessant phone calls asking them inane questions. The latter is what we want to concentrate on.

Public Policy Poling took an extensive poll of essentially all things that matter at the moment with voters. Their findings can be found in this epic deluge of percentages on such things as, "Is there a war on Christmas?"

One of the questions presented is: "Do you have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of Tim Tebow?"

The results are not the least bit shocking, favorable - 48 percent, unfavorable - 13 percent, not sure 40 percent. The fact is most people love themselves some Timmy Fourth Quarter.

I count myself as one of the people that have grown to admire the magic man in the clutch. The fact is he is the best and most riveting story of the season. If we are looking for surprises that should have us scratching our brains, it's this.

How can 40 percent have no idea how they feel about the most polarizing figure in sports? Second, and more importantly, how does Tebow even show up in a political survey?

Well, there are some other interesting results. The same poll found that 42 percent of respondents were "very conservative" and 35 percent were "somewhat conservative."

Yup, you can bet that the pending primaries for the Republican candidate will be strewn with mentions of Tebow. Ron Paul will state that he is a closer like Tebow. Michelle Bachmann might even Tebow after a speech.

Presidential candidates love to find new and inventive ways to pander to the people. Each one finds a horribly nuanced thing to cling to that they hope will have voters thinking, "You see, they are one of us."

Well that new "thing" is Tim Tebow. We are about to get inundated with Tebow in the political sphere. Yes, you can almost here that mountain of hype begin to shake before it crumbles.

Nothing can bring Tebow down. But even he can't survive a politician using his name for their end goal. Sorry, Mr. Clutch, but it was bound to happen at some point.
