NBA Rumors: LA Clippers Waiting for League to Lower Demands for Chris Paul

Matt ShetlerDec 13, 2011

On Monday the potential trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers seemed all but dead. Yet on Tuesday, there still seemed to be a chance that Paul could be packing his bags to Los Angeles as talks between the Clippers and the NBA have resumed.

There is only one thing left for the Clippers to do.

Wait for the NBA to lower its demands.

The league has all but taken over the negotiations for New Orleans in any type of talks involving Paul, but its asking price has been extraordinarily high.

In the initial proposal, the league wanted the Clippers' top five trade pieces, which include: Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu, Eric Bledsoe and Minnesota's unprotected 2012 first-round draft pick.

That's way too high, and Los Angeles was wise to back out.

This deal won't get done as long as the NBA insists on Gordon and Minnesota's pick. The Clippers would be foolish to part with both, and they likely won't at the end of the day.

What the Clippers were offering is a better package than anyone else is going to be able to offer, and since David Stern is making the final call on this situation, he's going to have to eventually realize that. Stern's options are limited to begin with since Paul will only sign an extension with certain teams.

Stern put the league in a difficult spot to begin with, having to make the decision on Paul. Now he must be willing to come off his trade demands or the NBA will risk watching one of its franchises watch its star player walk away for nothing.
