NHL Rumors: Chicago Blackhawks and More Teams That Should Pursue Roberto Luongo

Tim DanielsDec 13, 2011

Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo has been floated into trade discussions, according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun. The Canucks have received stellar play from backup Cory Schneider and would be willing to unload the star, but haven't found any suitors so far.

Here are three teams who should go after the Canadian netminder.

1. Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks currently find themselves in second place in the Western Conference despite shaky play from both Corey Crawford and Ray Emery. That's mostly because of an explosive offense, led by Jonathan Toews, that is averaging more than three goals per game.

Once the playoffs roll around, however, the game tightens up which will make things tougher on Chicago. Adding Luongo to the mix would represent a major upgrade and should take some pressure off the offense in the long run.

2. Ottawa Senators

Ottawa finds itself just one point out of the final playoff spot in the East even though expectations were lower than usual heading into the season. Milan Michalek has enjoyed a resurgence, scoring 18 goals in 30 games, but goaltending is an issue.

Neither Craig Anderson or Alex Auld currently sports a save percentage above .900, which is usually the benchmark for reasonable effectiveness. Getting more consistency from that position, which Luongo would provide, could be the push they need.

3. Tampa Bay Lightning

When it comes to the Lightning, a good way to describe them would be top heavy. Steven Stamkos, Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier are all terrific talents, but after that it gets a little sketchy. And their goalies are no exception.

Dwayne Roloson went on an incredible hot streak after being acquired, but hasn't been able to duplicate that success this season. Mathieu Garon hasn't been much better. Luongo would thrive out from under the microscope of Vancouver and could help Tampa Bay make a second-half dash toward the playoffs.
