College Football Recruiting 2012: Urban Meyer Dominating Big Ten Recruiting

T.J. McaloonDec 13, 2011

Urban Meyer has been on the job at Ohio State for less than a month, and he’s already dominating the Big Ten in recruiting.

Having a two-time BCS national champion coming into the conference meant that Urban was bound to steal a recruit or two.

However, no one thought that it would take less than four weeks before he started getting recruits to flip to Ohio State.

According to multiple media outlets, a pair of four-star defensive linemen in the Class of 2012 committed to the Buckeyes on Monday.  Tommy Schutt, the No. 5 defensive tackle in the country and the top-rated player in the state of Illinois, committed to OSU after being a firm Penn State verbal right up until the Jerry Sandusky scandal broke in State College, while Se’Von Pittman, the No. 8 defensive end in the country and No. 3 player in the state of Ohio, had been decommitted from Michigan State to stay in his home state.

"

Schutt told the website, Rivals.com, “I had a great visit this weekend to Ohio State and got to know the coaches and the players better. I spent a lot of time talking to Urban Meyer.”

That last line from Schutt has to strike fear into the coaches inside of the Big Ten. How many other recruits will spend a lot of time talking to Meyer? And if they spend time talking to Urban, how many of them will change their mind from their school to Ohio State?

It’s only taken him less than a month to snag two big players from Penn State and Michigan State. Just think what he can do with a full year to sway kids to come to Ohio State.

Urban will not bring in a Top-10 recruiting class this year. He hasn’t had a chance to make the rounds in-and-around Ohio to speak with high school athletes.

However, next year and the following years, Meyer will dominate the Big Ten in gaining four and five-star players. Because of Meyer’s recruiting ability, Ohio State will make it back to a BCS championship game within three years.
