Froch vs Ward: How and Why Andre Ward Will Win Super Six World Boxing Classic

Jeremy HerrigesDec 12, 2011

This Saturday, the Super Six World Boxing Classic draws to a close with a championship bout between Andre Ward and Carl Froch. Two of the world’s best super middleweight fighters will face each other not only for the tournament title but for the WBC and WBA super middleweight titles as well.

This is a hard fight to predict, but when it is all over, I believe that Andre Ward will win this bout.

Andre Ward and Carl Froch are very evenly matched. Froch has a size, reach and power advantage over Ward. Froch looks better on paper, but paper stats do not decide boxing matches.

Andre Ward is a masterful boxer, with a boxing IQ and wisdom beyond his 27 years of age. Beyond that, he has incredible stamina and a great chin; he has only been down once in his professional career.

To his credit, Froch has also proven to have a strong chin and has displayed a lot of heart in moments where his resolve was questioned. Froch has decent stamina, but I think that Ward has an advantage in the later rounds. Ward rarely shows fatigue late in fights, and Froch’s age doesn’t help—he’s 34 years old.

Most would agree that Froch is the power-puncher between the two. Froch has 20 KO’s to Ward’s 13, but neither fighter has knocked an opponent out since 2009.

This fight is going the distance.

Andre Ward is going to win this fight by using movement to nullify Froch’s reach advantage. Froch is going to be the aggressor, which means that Ward is going to have to play the role of counter-puncher well. He will need to make Froch miss while scoring with accurate punches before retreating.

Ward should look to mimic Miguel Cotto’s strategy against Antonio Margarito. But Ward isn’t a dynamic puncher, so this fight will contain less drama than Cotto vs. Margarito

I don’t see this fight becoming a slug-fest. If it does, then Froch will have a huge advantage, but I doubt this will happen. Ward’s too smart and too strong of a defensive fighter to allow himself to be put into that position.

In the end, Ward will triumph with brains, not brawn. Andre Ward will win this fight via unanimous decision.
