Rams vs. Seahawks: Latest Embarrassment Means Spagnuolo Era Nearing Its End

Gabe ZaldivarDec 13, 2011

The St. Louis Rams really should have declined playing in Monday night's game against the Seattle Seahawks. It only served to show the nation that the Rams are playing some awful brand of football this season.

Bumbling met fumbling, which shook hands with downright awful in the Emerald City Monday as the Seattle Seahawks destroyed the Rams 30-13.

The team that started the season as the out-and-out favorites to win the NFC West were just whacked by a team that was supposed to struggle. Instead, Pete Carroll's crew continue to put together a respectable season of beating the awful teams and engaging the good ones.

That is far more than can be said about the St. Louis Rams. I have filed through the excuses that have been given so far, many of them given by me as I shake my head in disgust.

There are the injuries, many to the vets and stars of this team. Much of that took place weeks ago, though.

What about a team that is still getting used to new offensive quarterback Josh McDaniels? Well, we are a couple weeks from the end of 2011 and that doesn't make up for a laughably incompetent defense.

The Rams are horrible and there is just one man that needs to shoulder the blame for that, and that's Steve Spagnuolo.

What started as a team fragmented by injury has become a squad fractured by immaturity and bad decisions. All of that is Spagnuolo to monitor and correct.

Instead, this team has continued to get worse as the weeks go on. Consider the Miami Dolphins, who have played much better in the second half. They have nothing to play for, yet they continue to improve every week.

That is the sort of resolve you want from a team. And yet the Dolphins have parted ways with Tony Sparano, the damage done at the beginning of the season being irreparable.

It's now time for the Rams to switch gears as well. A winning product needs to be put on the field, and that is proving to be beyond Spagnuolo.
