Tim Tebow Mania Inspires Don Imus to Say Something Stupid Again

Zachary D. RymerDec 12, 2011

These days, everybody has something to say about Tim Tebow. Thanks to the atmosphere he has created in recent weeks, each opinion is more grandiose than the last.

Some of these opinions are inspired. Others are downright stupid.

For a perfect example of the latter category, we turn to Don Imus. He got to talking about Tebow on Monday morning during his show on Fox Business Network, and he effectively joined Tebow and Jesus at the hip.

That's been done before, mind you, but not like this. BlackSportsOnline.com has the video, but there's only one quote worth talking about.

"You can't hate on Tebow, because if you're hating on Tebow you're hating on Jesus," said Imus.

To which you and everyone else with a rational mind should reply, "Did he really just say that?"

Yes, yes he did. Amazing.

I guess somebody was bound to say something like this sooner or later. Tebow rarely talks about himself without talking about his faith in Jesus, so Tebow and Jesus often end up in the same sentence whenever we talk about him.

Him meaning Tebow. Not Jesus. My guess (or at least my hope) is that Tebow rarely shows up in discussions about Jesus. The dude's a football player, not a disciple, though some will no doubt dispute the notion.

As for Imus, he clearly thinks that Tebow is more than just a believer. I guess that would be cool if Imus thinks all Christians have such a personal relationship with Jesus, but somehow I doubt that he does.

Regardless, saying that you're hating on Jesus if you're hating on Tebow is about as dumb as it gets.

One reason we know this is because we can consider the exact opposite. If you can hate Jesus via hating Tebow, then you must be able to love Jesus via loving Tebow.

Heck, that's not true.

To illustrate the point, I'll give you my perspective. I've been an atheist for years, but I've become a big Tim Tebow fan in recent weeks. That doesn't mean that I've gone out and accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Honestly, that would be pretty weird, and I'm pretty sure my fellow atheists would not approve.

The point: Tim Tebow exists independently of Jesus. You can like one and you can like both, just as you can hate one or hate both. Though, why you would hate one or the other at this point is beyond me.

Long story short, Don Imus said something you you're probably better off ignoring. This isn't quite as controversial as his remarks about the Rutgers women's basketball team back in 2007, but it's up there.

In any case, you are free to go about your day now. Just remember: If you hate on Don Imus, you're not hating on all pompous jackwagons in existence. You're just hating on him, and that's cool.
