NBA Rumors: Baron Davis to the Knicks Is the Ideal Scenario and Fit for Both

Dan FavaleDec 12, 2011

Although the Cleveland Cavaliers still must officially waive or amnesty Baron Davis, the possibility of him joining the New York Knicks is as strong as ever.

Davis left Cleveland to have his back examined. That could be the last time he does so as a member of the Cavaliers, as it has been deemed promising that he clears waivers and winds up in New York.

The defense-oriented Davis stands to be a hit in New York. There is some serious doubt as to whether Toney Douglascan handle the full-time duties, and Mike Bibby is on his last leg. Davis, as long as he stays healthy, adds a touch of scoring, a hint of passing and a dash of defense to the rapidly changing Knicks.

Additionally, Davis also gives Douglas a mentor. Billups would have been a good candidate for that role, but he seemed to always have one foot out of the door in New York. Douglas has never had the opportunity to play alongside a former All-Star point guard for an entire season, and such an occurrence would be immensely beneficial to his development.

For Davis, the Knicks present an opportunity for him to not only start, but contend for a title. He would have the luxury of being alongside Amar'e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler—a combination of weapons he has never had the chance to play with.

New York has welcomed Chandler into orange and blue with open arms, but Billups' departure left a gaping hole at the point guard position. Davis can arguably fill it out better than any other point guard on the roster or open market. So, while the Knicks maintain that Bibby and Douglas can get it done, don't expect them to remain idle if Davis clears waivers.

Is this a match made in heaven? Probably not, but under the circumstances, it's as ideal a fit as either party is going to find.
