Jimmy Graham Injury: Updates on Saint's TE Week 15 Status and Fantasy Value

T.J. McaloonDec 12, 2011

Jimmy Graham has been a must start for fantasy football owners this year. Aside from the New England Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski, Graham has been the best tight end in the NFL.

However, yesterday Graham played through a painful back injury against the Tennessee Titans.

Fantasy owners and New Orleans Saints were all heard gasping last week as news broke that stellar tight end jimmy Graham was questionable for the start. Things have cleared up a bit.

A full week of practice means plenty of looks for Graham this week against the Minnesota Vikings, so fantasy owners embattled in the playoffs should expect a healthy serving of Graham Sunday.

Update: Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 11:20 a.m. EDT by Alex Kay

Sean Payton spoke to the press today and said that Graham irritated his back during warmups but trainers were able to calm it down enough for him to play last Sunday. He got more comfortable as the game went on and was able to put together a decent game.

Now he's taking the proper steps to get back on the field this week. Payton said,

"

"Today he’s getting treatment and really that’s it.  But it was one of those and anybody that’s had back pains or occasionally stepped the wrong way, I would equate it to that.  We were lucky that he was able to bounce back.”

"

Expect him to be good to go for Week 15.

"

Graham was hobbling around to the tune of five catches for 55 quiet yards. The good news is that Graham was able to play through what he told reporters was severe pain, and he promised to be out there again versus the Minnesota Vikings in Week 15. Unfortunately, some of his fantasy owners might not be alive for that game to matter.

"

If you happened to win last week, or got a bye in your playoffs, this means that you should look elsewhere for a tight end. However, if you are stuck with Graham and do not feel comfortable with another tight end, then stay with Jimmy.

With that horrible back injury, Graham still had a productive five points. With the cesspool of tight ends available, you’re best option is a hurt Graham.

Even with a bad back, Graham should still have a productive game against Minnesota. The Vikings are ranked 26th in passing defense, allowing 249 yards per game and an NFL worst 26 touchdown passes.

Graham should play this week and should have a productive game. However, it is only Monday and things could change by the end of this week. Make sure you monitor his injury, as it may take a turn for the worse.
