DeMarco Murray Injury: Updates on Cowboys RB's Week 15 Status and Fantasy Value

Wes ODonnellDec 12, 2011

The Dallas Cowboys boasted their healthiest lineup of the season entering their Week 14 Sunday night matchup with the New York Giants.

It didn't stay that way. The Cowboys walked out of Jerry World with a loss and with their star rookie running back on crutches.

Murray is out for the season and, according to ESPN Dallas' Todd Archer, will hit the IR after surgery yesterday:

"

Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray will have surgery on his fractured right ankle Monday and be placed on injured reserve, according to multiple sources.

"

This was expected after Murray's injury on Sunday night against the Giants.

Dallas has a few options to bring on board in his place to back up Felix Jones. Archer's report indicates that veteran Sammy Morris will be at Valley Ranch today.

INITIAL UPDATE

ESPN Dallas writer Calvin Watkins tweeted:

The former Oklahoma Sooner was one of only two active running backs for the Cowboys and now they'll have to make their playoff push the same way they started the season: with Felix Jones as the starter.

Murray was averaging 5.5 yards per carry for the Cowboys this season and had proved more than capable of being a potential lead back in future years. Unfortunately, one of the reasons he fell to the third round in the draft is the reason he is out for the rest of the year.

Many experts labeled Murray as injury prone and possessing too slight a frame to handle the rigors of between-the-tackles running. He never truly wore down this season, though, and his fractured ankle is the result of an awkward landing and nothing else.

The Cowboys will miss him terribly.

Expect Dallas to find another veteran to bring in, but Felix Jones will be the guy the rest of the way. The former first-round pick was starting in the beginning of the season but also fell victim to injury allowing Murray a chance to shine.

Many of the same durability concerns that came with Murray come with Felix as well.

Unless it is a keeper league, you'll have to drop DeMarco Murray and wait to see who Dallas decides to add to the roster. If there is an outside chance that someone dropped Felix, you'd do well to pick him up.
