DeMarco Murray Injury: Update on Cowboys Star's Ankle Injury

Ryan RudnanskyDec 11, 2011

Dallas Cowboys star rookie running back DeMarco Murray suffered a right ankle injury in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the New York Giants and had to be taken to the locker room.

Murray, who has been a pleasant surprise for the NFC East-leading Cowboys this season, injured his ankle after an awkward tackle and remained down for several minutes while Cowboys and Giants players looked on with concern.

Murray has been a valuable waiver-wire add this season, and he had rushed for 827 yards on 5.5 yards per carry headed into Sunday's game.

Averaging nearly 10 fantasy points per game this season, Murray has helped fantasy owners in need of a boost.

Felix Jones will stand to benefit if Murray is forced out of action for an extended period of time.

Who's the Backup?

Felix Jones was supposed to be the starter of the Cowboys this season, but injuries and the emergence of Murray put an end to that.

Nonetheless, he does have the ability to make an impact in spurts if he starts receiving more carries. He racked up 800 rushing yards and 450 receiving yards last season as a multi-dimensional back.

He does have trouble running in-between the tackles, but if the Cowboys can open up some outside runs for him or screen passes, he still has the ability to make an impact.

Devastation Scale

I'm giving this a 7 out of 10.

While Jones can be an effective player for the Cowboys, Murray has already shown he's a more complete rusher, with the ability to charge ahead or swing out for outside runs.

It's no coincidence that the Cowboys starting gaining momentum this season when Murray emerged.

They are still team that relies on its passing game, but Murray gave them more balance on offense, which was something they lacked coming into this season.

Timeline for Return

Murray is questionable to return, according to Rotoworld.com.
