Chargers vs. Bills: 4 Key First Half Stats for the San Diego

Brad ReadDec 11, 2011

That was a one sided first half of football to say the least.  The Chargers came out and methodically worked there way down the field ending with an Antonio Gates touchdown catch.  On the first Bills possession Ryan Fitzpatrick was picked off after throwing into triple coverage.

Here we are at half with the Chargers leading 16-0 over the Bills.

Can the Chargers keep up this efficient and dominate play in the second half?

Here are four telling stats that explain the half that was and what the Chargers need to do to finish this game off:

1. 7:08
The first offensive possession the Chargers had ended in a touchdown pass to Antonio Gates. Seven minutes eight seconds is an outstanding drive to start the game because it ate up half of the quarter without the Bills touching the ball.  Maintain drives like this in the second half and the Chargers will win this game.

2. 1:0
This refers to the turnover ratio in the first half.  Right now the Chargers are doing a great job of taking care of the ball.  If they don’t turn the ball over they give themselves a great chance to win ball games.  What was key in the first half was the Chargers were able to pick off Ryan Fitzpatrick leading to seven points.  Win the turnover battle and win the game.

3. 9 Straight Completions
Philip Rivers is on his game today.  He is spreading the ball around and making great decisions when he is pressured.  This is the type of quarterback we know Rivers can be.  If he keeps up this stellar play in the second half the Chargers will win.

4. 95 Yards Rushing
Ryan Matthews is killing it today.  His is running effectively between the tackles and has been able to get outside for long bursts.  You have to give credit to the Chargers’ offensive line who are creating holes big enough for a truck to run through.  Keep pounding the ball to Matthews in the second half and seal this much needed win.
