NBA Rumors: Why Chauncey Billups Would Make the Miami Heat Unstoppable

Donald WoodDec 11, 2011

The Miami Heat are already one of the most dangerous teams in the NBA, but the addition of a player like Chauncey Billups would make them clear championship favorites.

While the team was wonderful last season, the addition of Billups would allow the team to move the ball down the court more efficiently. With both LeBron James and Dwyane Wade running the floor while Billups hits them in stride, the Heat’s fast-break attack would be too much to stop.

With the New York Knicks using their amnesty clause on Billups, he has become a free agent that must clear waivers first. That means if any team claims him, he will either seek a trade or just sit the season out.

I think the league, especially the small-market teams, are at a point where they are beyond tired of the bullying by players. So, yes, I think at least one team operating below the cap will put in a claim for Chauncey, essentially forcing his hand if he wants to collect the balance of his contract. If he doesn’t report, he doesn’t get paid. Depending on the rules, which remain somewhat unclear at this stage, the claiming team could then try to flip him for at least a draft pick. But considering the amount of players who have bullied themselves into prime landing spots recently, who knows? I do think the Heat would hold the door open for him, considering they did that for Mike Bibby, who is not nearly the player that Chauncey still could be.

Billups may be injury-prone at this point in his career, but he is a better starter at point guard than any other option on the Heat right now or in the free agency market (assuming he gets that far).

Billups > Bibby.

The biggest difference for the Heat would be in the half-court game. All the questions of who takes the ball in the last seconds of the game would be answered by Billups passing.

Let Billups get the ball into the offensive zone and analyze the floor, finding the player with the best option to hit the shot. You need a player with no bias towards anyone that just wants the ball in the basket.

With Billups taking more pressure off LeBron James, he would be able to further get his big-moment mojo back. The bottom line; if the Heat sign Chauncey Billups, they will win the title this season.
