WWE: 4 Effortless Ways of Making WWE Shows Interesting Again
If I was any good, I'd be in the WWE Creative, but I'm not, so I guess I'll just churn out articles like these and hope they read this someday.
Now I know that the recent ratings drop will improve once Football season ends, but it'll still be a pitiful number. (compared to what WWE has had in the past).
It'll be next to impossible to get back those hardcore fans who loved the Attitude Era and ergo hate the PG era unless you actually scrap PG, but that won't be happening. So let's concentrate of improving what we have.
By the way, I feel the WWE creative is one lazy bunch. I had to bash them, sometime.
So here are some short and effective improvements.
Wrestling Variety
1 of 4Over the year, we've had one Beat The Clock Challenge (this week's SmackDown), two 2/3 Falls matches, very few Falls Count Anywhere matches, 2 Hell In A Cell matches, few Handicap matches, just one upcoming TLC match, no Buried Alive, Ultimate Submission, Casket and Gauntlet matches... and my personal favourite, Tornado Tag Team Matches (just one in two years I believe)
While PG has ensured that Hell In A Cell matches have become a joke and First Blood and Inferno matches have done a Dodo bird (i.e. gone extinct), we can at least hope to see some variety in the weekly shows as well as the PPVs. How hard would it be to have 2/3 Falls for a WWE Title match instead of the normal thing? Or an Ultimate Submission or a Falls Count Anywhere?
The fact there is possibility for a different kind of ending to a match is what creates the extra excitement. You'll also have more to hype and excite the viewers in these kind of matches and they won't break your beloved PG barrier either.
I left out Iron Man Matches, because I don't think I can watch any of the current stars for an hour. (CM Punk maybe)
Revamp Commentary Team
2 of 4I know, you all think of Future Endeavoring Michael Cole when commentary comes to the mind, but I surprisingly don't. Michael Cole can actually commentate, and do it way better than Jerry Lawler or Booker T.
It's just his nagging heel persona that's made him so damn annoying (even more than John Laryngitis). I don't really mind him praising the heels and speaking for the dark side, but when he goes overboard with it is when I get annoyed.
I don't know how many of you remember Matt Striker as a member of the commentary team, but he did an excellent job. I'm not sure if he was meant to be a heel or not, but he always spoke his mind on anyone and everyone, and spoke logically. He also has a lot more knowledge of wrestling than the current team combined.
When you have the best in Jim Ross already with you, why on Earth do you want to keep him out? I don't get it. If you have the best, use him.
These are the changes I'd propose:
RAW: Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole
SmackDown: Matt Striker & Josh Matthews/Todd Grisham (No need to have Cole on both shows)
Cut the Crap
3 of 4Let's have segments that entertain us in some way or the other rather than mocking Mae Young or a shot of Johnny Ace texting? (I do feel he's improving however, with his performance in the RAW contract signing.)
Let John Cena dress up like a Zack-Ryder-gone-so-wrong-he-looks-like-Darren-Young more. Let R-Truth have more backstage segments (he's probably the most entertaining heel in the current roster). Give Cody Rhodes and Dolph Ziggler more time on the mic.
If we have time to squeeze in Teddy Long-Aksana segments, we have time for a lot more. Heck, cut out the Vault videos which show matches from 2008-09 and add in some matches for guys like JTG, Drew McIntyre or Justin Gabriel.
But then again, I'm not member of the WWE Creative. I can see why.
Get Back the Crowd Favourites
4 of 4I like that Mick Foley is back, but he's being used horribly. I firmly believe WWE should try and work things out with guys like Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan and get them back. Hear me out.
If you say that the young stars need the spotlight, I agree with you.
If you say these oldies will take that spotlight, I agree with you, again.
But imagine the pop WWE would get if they say Hulk Hogan is coming back to guest host RAW? Or maybe he's the RAW GM? Would it get back fans? Yes.
Would you watch just to see your childhood hero again? Yes.
Trust me, I don't want them competing or hogging mic time. I want them to take up the role taken by Rowdy Roddy Piper and Booker T...put over talent.
Let Hulkster talk to Cena about being the face of the company. Let Ric Flair manage Wade Barrett. Bring back Edge from time to time with the Cutting Edge.
I don't want them competing, I don't want them talking a lot...but I want them around. Perfect example - Rowdy Roddy Piper
I'm pretty sure all of us would love to listen to "Wooooo!" or "Brudder" or watch Hogan tear his shirt again. Better than listening to or watching Big Daddy Cool Diesel, yes?
