Jon Jones: 5 Fights Before the Light Heavyweight Champ Moves to Heavyweight

G DDec 11, 2011

Jon Jones entered the Octagon in Toronto to take on enormous underdog Lyoto Machida in the main event of Saturday evening.

In their light heavyweight championship bout, it was Machida who controlled action early and stole away Round 1 from Jones.

However, the same couldn't be said for the second frame as Jones came alive, eventually submitting Machida via guillotine choke.

Jones has once again established himself as the best 205-pound fighter in the world and the undisputed UFC light heavyweight champion.

As Jones continues to pick apart his respected division, fans across the globe begin to discuss the possibility of seeing Jones fight at the heavyweight division.

However, there is still for more Jones to accomplish before he makes the transition to the 265-pound weight class.

So, the following slides display five fights for Jon Jones to take before he moves weight divisions.

Let's take a look.

Rashad Evans

1 of 5

Rashad Evans will have the opportunity to square off with his former friend and current enemy Jones if he can manage to get by Phil Davis at UFC on FOX 2.

Evans has publicly announced his dislike toward Jones on several occasions.

With their past and current heated rivalry, Jones vs. Evans is a must in the near future.

Phil Davis

2 of 5

Similar to that of Evans, Phil Davis too will have the opportunity of meeting Jones inside the Octagon for a 205-pound championship bout if he can somehow defeat his opponent at UFC on FOX 2.

Davis could be one of the biggest threats to Jones, as he is one of the best wrestlers not only in the light heavyweight division but the UFC as a whole.

Jones would have an extremely difficult time taking Davis down as it's never happened before in his career.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua

3 of 5

While it wasn't too long ago that Mauricio "Shogun" Rua lost his light heavyweight title to Jones, he will eventually deserve a title shot.

And as we know, Shogun wasn't at full health when he circled the Octagon with Jones the first go-around.

Therefore, a second meeting between the two is a must before Jones can leave for the heavyweight division.

Dan Henderson

4 of 5

Dan Henderson is quickly approaching a light heavyweight title shot as he is coming off one of the greatest fights of all time in his victory over Rua at UFC 139.

Henderson is believed to be next in line for Jones following Evans-Davis and is one of the hardest hitters in the UFC today.

Fortunately for Henderson, he's never been knocked out in his career, which could be a huge disadvantage to Jones.

Anderson Silva

5 of 5

While it's very unlikely to occur at this point in time, in order to establish the greatest fighter in the UFC right now, Jones will have to square off with current middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Similar to Jones, Silva has dominated nearly every opponent that's come his way up until this point in his career.

Jones vs. Silva is a must before Jones can move to the heavyweight division.
