Heisman Trophy Winner Robert Griffin III: Why He Was Only Magical Invitee

Dan VastaDec 10, 2011

This was a highly anticipated Heisman Trophy ceremony, and the suspense ended officially once Robert Griffin's name was called.

However, what can we say about the invitees? Their numbers all look great, and their talents rank among the best we have seen in quite some time. Plus, I am as positive as they come, but were there any legit Heisman moments from the other invitees?

No!

Andrew Luck did have his moment against USC, but the game went into triple overtime, and it got there because of his pick six. Look at Montee Ball and all you see are touchdowns and more touchdowns. He is a machine, but he couldn't steal the spotlight down the stretch of any of his game because his team either lost or because Russell Wilson was too busy stealing the show himself.

Trent Richardson should have been the guy to take over, but the Alabama schedule could not allow him to. Ole Miss was one of his signature moments followed by an Auburn team that went 7-5.

He totaled for nearly 200 yards against the LSU Tigers defense, but his team lost, and he could not reach paydirt.

Tyrann Mathieu was suspended or else he could have a better case, but only one player has ever won the Heisman on the defensive side of the ball (Charles Woodson).

He brought back four non-offensive touchdowns, but the suspension on top of not being able to touch the ball on every snap hurt his case a bit. He had a few tremendous punt return touchdowns, but there was still no magical moments like the ones that Robert Griffin III offered.

Griffin's moments against TCU in the season opener was followed up by one sensational performance for the ages against the Oklahoma Sooners. He put on the Superman cape by throwing for four TDs and totaling for over 500 yards!

Then, against the only top-40 defensive team he faced all season, he beat the Longhorns into an oblivion by throwing for 320 yards and four total TDs.

This was a bit of an odd season since we are accustomed to seeing some player running away with the Heisman, but Griffin would likely had fallen short to Luck had it not been for all three of those performances.

Luck was buried by the Ducks and could not live up to the unfair expectations that were placed on him, but we should all realize that RGIII has overcome a ton of adversity along the way to winning the 77th Heisman Trophy.
