UFC 140 Results: Jared Hamman's Reputation Takes Hit in Loss to Philippou

Mike ChiariDec 10, 2011

Jared Hamman is known by UFC commentators as "rubber chin" for his ability to absorb tons of punishment without getting knocked out. At UFC 140, however, he looked a lot more like "glass chin" as Constantinos Philippou battered him and scored a first-round knockout.

While Hamman isn't exactly a top prospect, he has a reputation of being a tough customer who won't go down without a fight. He was simply outclassed by Philippou in this bout, however, as Philippou simply stood his ground and delivered a number of stinging strikes.

Philippou knocked him down at one point, and when Hamman got to his feet and staggered, Philippou finished the job. The victory will still look good on the growing resume of Philippou, but it is hard to see where Hamman can go from here.

He is a capable middleweight fighter, who can usually stand toe to toe with his opponents, but Philippou seemed to expose the fact that Hamman can't handle a true power puncher. It isn't as if Hamman has faced a lot of top-notch fighters in the past, but this loss makes it seem as if he would get wiped out by an elite talent.

Hamman has been very inconsistent in recent fights as he is just 2-3 over his past five contests. Now, after losing to Philippou, his career is in a state of flux. Essentially, he seems stuck right where he is as he has already passed the level of fighting tomato cans, and more advanced fighters likely wouldn't give him the time of day.

Philippou is no slouch, so losing to him is nothing for Hamman to be ashamed of. It is the manner in which he lost that will truly hurt him moving forward. Hamman is normally able to scratch and claw in fights where he isn't at his best, but Philippou made him look like an amateur.
