UFC 140 Results: Rich Attonito's Weak Showing vs. Jake Hecht Will Haunt Him

Tim DanielsDec 10, 2011

After picking up a win over Daniel Roberts in his welterweight debut, Rich Attonito suffered a setback at UFC 140. He was knocked out by Jake Hecht just over a minute into the second round after an onslaught of punches.

It's the second loss in Attonito's last three fights after falling to Dave Branch last December. A conservative schedule paired with multiple losses doesn't bode well for the “Raging Bull.”

Every time it seems like he's starting to build up some momentum, he'll suffer a loss that causes him to drop back to square one. He's shown some glimpses of potential during his 10 career victories but definitely needs to work on his consistency.

He entered the fight as a favorite, which makes the loss even more disappointing. He should have been able to control the fight from the outset against Hecht, who hadn't fought a fighter of his caliber before Saturday night.

Instead, he allowed the underdog to bring the fight to him. And Hecht seemed to gain confidence with every punch to the point where Attonito had no option other than to protect himself.

After a performance like that, a fighter needs to look himself in the mirror and ask what went wrong. Was he overconfident? Did he do everything he could to prepare? Once the problem is pinpointed, it must be corrected before his next trip to the octagon.

In order to make a name for himself in the increasingly popular sport, Attonito needs to string together victories. His longest winning streak so far is just four, that isn't enough to make his presence known in any division, so there's no use switching any more.

He needs to start being more aggressive from the opening bell. The New Jersey native has enough tools to at least become a legitimate contender, but right now, he's nothing more than a card filler.

And that's a title no fighter wants attached to his name.
