UFC 140 Results: John Cholish Proves to Be Complete Fighter in Debut

Mike ChiariDec 10, 2011

John Cholish entered his UFC debut match against Mitch Clarke having won seven straight fights and he exited it with eight consecutive wins as he completely decimated the formerly-undefeated Clarke in a second-round knockout.

Clarke had the home-country advantage as the fight took place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, but it clearly had no effect on the well-rounded Cholish. Throughout the fight, Cholish proved to be the superior fighter regardless of whether they were standing up or on the mat.

Cholish ultimately won when he rolled through after a kimora attempt and wound up on Clarke's back. Cholish proceeded to pummel "Danger Zone" with numerous left and right hands to the face and head until the official stepped in to stop it.

Clarke was left a bloody mess on the canvas as Cholish was victorious. Cholish held the dominant position on the mat numerous times throughout the fight, but he also seemed to get the better of Clarke when they were both upright.

Neither fighter did too much damage in terms of punches and kicks, although Cholish did land a hard right hand that dazed Clarke a bit. In a lot of ways, I believe Clarke was set up to win and be the one vaulted to the next level as his record was previously unblemished.

Cholish proved to be the true star, however, and is now poised to make some noise in the lightweight division. It was only Cholish's debut fight in UFC, so he obviously has a long way to go, but he clearly surpassed Clarke and many other younger fighters on the totem pole.

It remains to be seen how Cholish might hold up against top-level fighters, but he is one step closer to finding out. I tend to believe he has a bright future, though, as his multi-dimensional fighting style will allow him to compete with all kinds of different fighters.
